HAWKE’S BAY FOOTBALL.

(BV WIRE. —FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) June 12th. On Saturday last the Caledonian senior and junior teams played matches against the Pirates seniors and juniors. The senior match resulted after a well fought game in a draw, both sides scoring 8 points. The Pirates in the first spell obtained 2 tries, Swan scoring on both occasions, and W. O’Connell converted one. The Pirates held the advantage until half the second spell was over, when thev seemed to • fall to pieces somewhat, and' Double and P. Kelly scored in close succession. Laws kicked a goal from the second try. The Caledonians had considerably the best of the game towards the conclusion of the match, and had time permitted would undoubtedly have won, as they were in far better condition than their opponents. Simmonds, P. Kelly and Munro played well forward for the Caledonians, and H. Kelly, Knight and Gay shone conspiciously amongst their backs for the Pirates. Swan played a fine game forward, although manifesting a tendency to off-side play, and was ably seconded by Cheer, Downey, and D. O’Connell. The Pirates backs were hardly up to their usual form, but Coughlan at fullback showed a great improveon his previous form. The junior match which was more like a Parliamentary debate than an exposition of Rugby football resulted in an easy win for the Caledonians by 8 points to nil. Presting and Cameron scored tries for the winners, one of which Ryan converted. Besides the scorers McLean and Miller played well for the winners. Franklin, Kenny and Brophy were the best of the Pirates. The Te Aute seniors forfeited to the County at Hastings.
