WELLINGTON.

[by

WIRE.]

October 3 1. Mr Joseph Poole, formerly partner with Mr Frank Hill as bookmakers and totalisator workers, was on Saturday last committed to the Wellington Lunatic Asylum, having been declared insane by three local doctors. He came to Wellington from Wanganui, where he resided for years. Over a week ago telegrams were received by Mr E. F. Yuile and others that he was coming and that he was unfit to be at large. On Saturday week he was knocking about town drinking, and in the evening he was arrested for drunkenness and sent to the gaol hospital. On Monday he was brought before the R.M. and remanded for medical treatment, and in the interval he was examined by several doctors, who agreed that he was insane. On Saturday several of his friends went down to see him. He was apparently well and recognised them all, but talked incoherently about having come into a large sum of money, through a law suit which was to bring him a lot more, when he would go to England, etc. At times it is said he developes dangerous symptoms. He has a wife and I believe children at Wanganui. His wife wanted him sent home, but the doctors agreed that he was unfit to be at large. The disqualification of Tim Swiveller created great consternation amongseveral local bookmakers who thought they had a skinner, but now, not only have they to pay several straight out starting price bets on Sainfoin but have to carry him forward in doubles with dangerous horses in the Melbourne Cup. Freeth’s horses Violence and Revolt, Mr Portland’s Pinrose, and Mr K. McKenzie’s Porepo, who won at Hawke’s Bay, have gone to Blenheim to take part in the Marlborough races on the rst and 2nd November. Mr Halward’s Kent would also have gone, but at the last moment it was found that the horse was suffering from dentition, and the owners decided not to send him.

The Wellington Trotting Club’s Spring Meeting at Miramar on Wednesday last was a greet success. There were about 1000 people present, and Mr F. N. Jones put ios through the machine in ios tickets. The following were the results : —
