NAPIER.

October 28.

During the last four years Hawke’s Bay horses have won the Wanganui Derby, hut it must be remembered that in 1891 there were two Derbies run, Fraternite winning one of them. Our successful representatives have been Tirailleur, Queen of Trumps, St. Katherine and Noyade.

A great many Hawke’s Bay people are standing loyal to Loyalty for the Melbourne Cup Whitefoot (Koreelah —Hope) was a strong tip for the First Hurdles at the Caulfield Meeting, and so well was he that the race was thought all over. Mr Gollan’s Leonardo consequently tilted against what may be termed a ‘ snag,’ but Whitefoot only got home by half a length. Leonardo will win many a hurdle race over there yet if he keeps well. A great many people here confounded Strephon, winner of the First Hurdles at Wanganui, with Mr Douglas’ horse. Duplication of names again ! St. Laura, who ran second in the Wanganui Derby, was among the final acceptors for the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, but was knocked out of the list before the race.

The committee of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club have decided to revise the programme by increasing the added monej in the hurdle races at the Autumn meeting to £IOO, and that the Hawke’s Bay Cup be a piece of plate valued at £IOO, with 300 sovs added. Messrs Ormond and Logan have been appointed to select the plate. The value of the Christmas Handicap has been increased by £2O, while 20 sovs has been added to the Hurdle Race at the winter meeting. The license of W. F. Gillett, jockey, has been suspended for one month, for disobedience. The following programmes have been approved :—Waipawa County Racing Club, 27th December; Woodville District Jockey Club, 1 st January ; Onga Onga Racing Club, 27th December; Danevirke Jockey Club, 26th January; Mohaka Races. 26th December. The programme of the Ormondville Racing Club was not approved. My fancy for the New Zealand Cup, Dilemma, figures in the final payments and I rather think he will be the stable horse on the day. He won the Spring Handicap at North Otago the other day with 8.9 up in indifferent time, but he

won, and could not be expected to do more. He will make Stepniak go all he knows. These two and Prime Warden appear the best in the race, albeit I never was a fancier of the last-named. Three mares represent Hawke’s Bay in the race —St. Katherine, Rosefeldt and Thame, and I must confess that I think that there is not much show of the stake coming to this district.

Monte Carlo, who won two races at Wanganui, only won two races during the whole of last season, one at Hastings and one at Marton.

The secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, Mr F. D. Luckie, having received a letter from the chairman of the conference of New Zealand Metropolitan Club delegates in regard to the representation of country clubs, is writing to the various clubs in this district on the subject. At the conference held in July last it was resolved that the election should be conducted by the Metropolitan Clubs in each district, who should frame regulations for conducting the elections. The Hawke’s Bay country clubs had been allotted two votes, and Mr Luckie is now asking them to give effect to the decision of the conference. As the minor clubs in this district are within easy reach of each other, it would no doubt be agreeable for them to conduct the election themselves, and report the result to tire Jockey Club. The committee had consequently appointed Mr John Close (president of the Napier Park Club), chairman, with power to call meetings, &c. The voting power had been apportioned as follows : —Napier Park Club three votes, Waipawa, Woodville, and Town and Suburban clubs two votes each, and Waipukurau, Onga Onga, Porangahau, Herbertville, Mohaka, Danevirke, Wairoa, and Rissington clubs one vote each. Representatives from not less than six c lubs to form a quorum. Mr Close will communicate further with the clubs interested on the subject. Judging by the way Stanmoor finished in the Spring Handicap at Hastings and the Derby at Wanganui, one would be led to infer that he is best over a short course.

I cannot see what is to beat Pompom in the Welcome Stakes at Christchurch, unless it is Searchlight. Those who backed Loch Ness, Westmere, St. Anthony, Fraternite and Strephon pretty heavily, pulled a long face when they observed the unpleasant fact that their names were not in the final payments for the New Zealand Cup. There is a long way better field out of the New Zealand Cup than there is in it. It might possibly be interesting to know the horses that have dropped out of that race up to the present. Here is a little list: St. Hippo, Merganser, Launceston, Saracen, Crackshot, Loyalty, Palliser, Leolantis, North Atlantic, Fraternite, Blizzard, Reynard, Quilt, Au Revoir, Westmere, Crown Jewel, Tempest, Captive, Dishonor, St. Anthony, Royal Rose, Outpost, Ultimatum, Riversdale, Strephon, Lady Zetland, Lakeshell, Gitano, Midas, Stanmoor, Solano, The Artist, Ruatangata, My Jack, Musket, Chris, Loch Ness, Frivolity, Magazine, Viscount, Tussock, Ua, Rangiatea, The Dreamer, Goosander, Haeata, Purepo, Allanadale, Spinaway, Sister Mary, Black Cloud, and two colts by Le Loup—Tangi and St. Leger—Radiant respectively. Whatever beats Noyade in the C.J.C. Oaks next month will win. Strephon, winner of the First Hurdles at Wanganui, is half-brother to the old steeplechaser Uranus. [by wire. J Oct. 31. Twenty Hawke’s Bay horses are nominated for the Wellington Cup. Quilt (Robinson Crusoe—Patch) is to have four mares put to him, and then taken up and raced in the autumn. Lady Maxwell, the dam of Mutiny, visits Waterfall. She has missed for years. Chatterbox, who is racing on the other coast, was her last foal. There was not much betting here last week over the Cups. Stepniak, Dilemma, and Response were the chief ones backed, a few lines only being written about local candidates.

Torpedo, Hiko, and Waterfall will be each given eight mares at Te Mahanga this season.

It is said that more will be heard of the Stockboy case which has caused some trouble in turf circles at Palmerston North, for the defendant in the civil action heard at Wanganui avers he has fresh evidence, and wants another hearing. Egyptilla has dropped a colt foal to Torpedo, and Queen Rose a filly to Quilt at Te Mahanga.

The following is my selection for the New Zealand Cup Meeting :—Cup— Dilemma i, Clanranald 2, Stepniak 3. The Oaks — Noyade 1, Ich Dien 2, Persuasion 3. The Derby —Skirmisher 1, Noyade 2.
