WIRE. ]

October 3. The annual meeting of the MastertonOpaki Jockey Club was held at Masterton on Saturday evening, the president, Mr A. W. Cave, in the chair. It was resolved on the motion of Mr J. Walker, “ That in future the balance-sheet be prepared as soon as possible after July 31, and that the annual meeting be held on second sale day in August.” The balance-sheet for the past season showed a balance of is id to credit, and assets over liabilities by 9s. During the year improvements to the extent of /700 18s nd had been effected on the course. The report and balance-sheet, which were considered very favourable, were unanimously adopted. The following officers were elected : —President, Mr A. W. Cave ; treasurer, Mr A. A. Elkins ; judge, Mr C. F. Vallance; clerk of course, Mr W. lorns ; starter, Mr W. H. Hirschberg; handicapper, Mr A. King ; timekeeper, Mr J. Muir; clerk of scales, Mr W. Shaw ; stewards, Messrs A. Walker, C E. and T. E. Chamberlain, C. Cowper, A. Henderson, H. Yates, T. D. Thompson, W. Cameron, Hawke, and W. H. Buick The action of the stewards in drawing up a programme for Boxing Day was confirmed, and the secretary was instructed to call for tenders for working the totalisator. A vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring officers, and several new members having been elected the meeting adjourned. At a committee meeting of the Foxton Racing Club, held on Thursday last the following programme was agreed to for January 22nd :—Flying Handicap of 40 sovs ; Trial Hurdles of 25 sovs ; Handicap Hurdles of 40 sovs; Foxton Handicap of 100 sovs; Electric Handicap of 30 sovs; Stewards’Handicap 50 of sovs ; Anniversary Stakes of 20 sovs. The Johnsonville Trotting Club has altered its date of meeting from 28th

October to Wednesday, Ist November, and has issued an unamended programme. Five or six Canterbury trotters are under orders to come up for the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held during the next month. T. Waddington has sold his trotting mare Gentle Annie, by Berlin, to a wellknown Hutt sportsman, who, however, says he does not mean to race her. The protest against Hiamoe and Auckland, the dead heaters at the Rangitikei Jockey Club’s meeting on Wednesday last, was made on the ground that they missed a jump. After a long enquiry the protest was dismissed by 5 votes to 4. The victory of Dromedary in the Second Hurdles at Hawke’s Bay to-day was very popular in Wellington. The mare is by Voltigeur, and up to the end of last season raced as a hack. She then came out at the Wairarapa Hunt Club’s Steeplechase meeting, and won the Open Steeplechase after falling in the first round, and losing fully 200 yards. She belongs to a popular young Wairarapa sportsman, for whom she is trained and raced by C. McKenzie, of Taukerinikau. One of the passengers by the Wakatipu is Mr W. Topham, who has been engaged, by Mr D. O’Brien in Australia to take charge of his New Zealand team, and he is now on his way down. Topham is a well-known trainer, having been at one time head lad to Ike Foulsham, and he also took home Lady Betty and Mr J. White’s second English team.

It may now be safely assumed that unless Dan O’Brien gets a good offer for Loyalty he will remain in Australia and superintend the colt’s preparation for the Melbourne Cup. Mrs. O’Brien went through to Sydney by the Hauroto on Wednesday last, so that there is no doubt about Mr O’Brien staying for the Cup. The following handicaps have been declared by Mr. A. King, the handicapper, for the Wairarapa Trotting Club’s Spring Meeting :— Maiden Handicap, two miles (in Saddle) — Miro scr, Toby ssecs, Gobo losecs, Trigger losecs, Romp losecs, Ivy losecs, Hairwash losecs, Fisherman losecs, Wild Rose losecs, Rocket 11. issecs, A.G. issecs, Larry issecs, Quickstep issecs, Shamrock issecs.
