NAPIER.

July 15The annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club was held on the 12th inst. Mr G. Ellis, the president of the club, occupied the chair. The report and balance-sheet read and adopted showed that after paying all expenses of the new course, miscellaneous expenses, salaries, &c., of the past year, there remained a credit balance of 5s 6d. The total assets of the club are set down at 14s 7d. The sum of had been spent upon the course alone. There are absolutely no liabilities. The report called attention to the fact that the horses competing at the meeting during the past year had been of a superior class to those previously competing. The opinion of the committee was that trotting was certainly conducive to the breeding of an all-round useful class of horse. The committee explained that the grand-stand would have been erected for the winter meeting but for the unpropitious weather. Plans had been approved and adopted. The following committee were elected : —Messrs W. C. Maddison, H. L. Jull, J. Mclvor, W. Edwards, W. Y. Dennett. G. Laud, R. Gooseman C. A. Loughnan and J. Dove. Ten new members were elected. It was decided that in future a member’s ticket should admit three ladies. A hearty vote of thanks to the retiring officers was passed. The new committee met subsequently and elected Mr G. Ellis president, Mr Donald McLean vice-president, Mr A. T. Danvers handicapper, Mr A. C. Lean judge, Mr W. Y. Dennett treasurer, Mr W. Edwards timekeeper, Mr J. T. Vautier clerk of the scales, Mr B. C. Ware clerk of the totalisator, Mr J. Lopdell clerk of the course, and Messrs Dennett and Mclvor starters. I like Norton, Tiritea, Victrix, and of the lower-weighted division Scaltheen for the C.J.C. Grand National Steeplechase, and Stranger, Gondolier and Jack in the Grand National Hurdles.

The cup won by Echo in the Gisborne Hunt Club Steeplechase, with 13.4 up. is a nice memento of the victory. The win was a most popular one, and Mr Robson rode the Wellington Steeplechase winner (who beat Mangahone by a head it will be remembered) himself. Fred Collins, who trained him, was presented after the race with a valuable scarf pin, studded with diamonds.
