Racing men, apparently, are looked upon as choice morsels for those who deal in a despicable form of blackmail. The well-known trainer Alec Taylor, of Manton, England, who for such a long time trained for the Duchess of Montrose, was recently charged with attempting a rape on a married woman. The charge, however, was proved to be a gross attempt at blackmail, and the woman and her husband were each sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. At the Southland (Invercargill) Racing Club’s meeting, on Dec. 27 and 28, the principal event was the Invercargill Cup, one mile and three quarters, which fell to Mr J. Stephenson’s mare Tempest who had 8.0 in the saddle. Don Pedro finished second, but a protest on the ground that he had run inside a post was sustained, and the second money awarded to Milord. Pique, who beat Reprisal once in the Publicans’ Handicap at Dunedin but has never done anything since, put up 7.8 in the Flying Handicap, 5 furlongs, and beat Rondinella, Rothamstead and four others. Don Pedro, 8.7, was victorious in the President’s Handicap, one mile, Finella, 7.4, and Derby, 7.7, filling the other places. Forbury, the five-year-old brother to First Lord, by Albany—Fallacy, won the Maiden Plate, w.f.a., one mile and a half for Mr Stephenson, who, however, ‘went down ’ in the Racing Club Handicap, one mile and a quarter, his representative Tempest, 8.1 1, being beaten two lengths by Don Pedro, 9.0. The same horse, with x 0.12, won the Welter Handicap of miles and a distance, and Forbury, 8.6, took the Shorts Handicap, 4 furlongs, beating Rothamstead and two others. In the Waihopai Handicap, one mile, Finetta won by a length from Rondinella, but on a protest being entered it was shown that in the straight Buddicombe, the rider of Finetta, had bored Rondinella on to the rails. The protest was, therefore, upheld, and Buddicombe was severely reprimanded. Mr Stephenson finished up the meeting with a win in the Consolation by the aid of Derby.
