The Timaru Guineas of 1893, which is run at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting, closed last week with 26 entries, to which number Mr. G. H. Clifford was the largest contributor with a trio. Mr. Stead has entered a couple and Mr. J. Dooley ditto, both the latter s representatives being by First Lord, who was certainly one of the fastest horses as a two-year-old that ever trod the New Zealand turf. It will be remembered that this year the race resulted in a bit of a fizzle, only Warrington coming forward to try conclusions with Vogengang, but next year s race gives promise of something, for the entry ot six and twenty means 13 more than were engaged for this year’s race, and eight more than for the 1891 event.
