Castor was a great performer at all weights and distances, winning .22 races out of 28 starts. His stock are particularly promising, robust, and handsome, showing great bone and substance. PATRICK.” St. Patrick, who was foaled iu 1877, is by The Premier out of Phoenix,by Gownsman out of Ikamataki, by Figaro out of Brunette, by Riddlesworth. The Premier is by Malton (imported son of Rifleman) out of Revoke, the dam of Trump Card and Amazon. Gownsman (imp.) was by Surplice (winner of the English DerbyJ out of Tomyris, by Sesostris out of Glaucus mare. Phoenix, the dam of St. Patrick, won the Pahautanui Stakes at Wellington and the Consolation at Masterton in 1875, beating large fields in both races. She also ran second to Cocksure in the Hutt Park Stakes, third for the Provincial Plate, and third for the Consolation, the pair in front of her in the latter being Fishhook and Pungawerewere (both Dunedin Cup winners). Phoenix was a good performer over all distances, competing successfully against the best horses of her day. . Pedigree : PADDY’S LAND is a powerfully built dark brown horse, foaled 29th May, 1888. He stands about 16 hands high, on short legs, with great strength, lots of quality, and is a beautiful mover. He was bred by J. Dufim, County Dublin, Ireland. His sire the world-famed Ascetic, by Hermit from Lady Alicia, by Melbourne. Ascetic is the sire of Royal Meath, winner of the Grand Prix Steeplechase at Paris. He is also the sire of Cloister, who ran second in the last two Liverpool Grand National Steeplechases. Paddy’s Land’s dam Maymorn by Old Victor (winner of the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, and got by Vindex, by Touchstone); granddam Lady Norah, by Mount Zion (by Mountain Deer, by Touchstone out of Devotion, by Harkaway) ; g. granddam Polly, by Arthur (by Sir Hercules out of Angelica, by Sir Harry Dunsdale); g. g. granddam of Whalebone. It will be seen by the above that Paddy’s Land combines some of the stoutest strains of blood in the world, and from his size, strength, action, and quality, he ought to make a fit sire to get horses for the racecourse, hunting field, or for Indian or town purposes.
