Taranaki v. Canterbury.

(from our own correspondent.)

New Plymouth, August 30.

It is reported as a fact that an hour or so before the Taranaki-Canterbury match started, several of the Taranaki team waited on their Captain, A. Bayly, and intimated to him that they would not play if R. Lusk, who was picked in the team, was allowed to play. A. Bayly must have given in to the deputaion, because Lusk did not play, his place being filled by W. Bayly, whose position at half-back was taken by R. Tate. The objection against Lusk was based, it is stated, on the form he displayed in the match against Auckland. The action of the members of the team who objected to Lusk being included in the team is in some quarters adversely commented upon. The first contest between the New Plymouth and Star Clubs ended disastrously for the former, as the .Cup winners went througTTthem to the tunc of 22 points to nil. A round of Junior Cup matches is now being got off. Last Thursday Clifton Rovers beat Star 11. by 9 points to nil. Next Thursday week Tukapa play Clifton Rovers here. The Rugby Union have ordered the Star v. Eltham Cup match to be played again, as the latter protested that they never agreed to meet the Star on a Thursday. The game will be played on neutral ground at Inglewood on Thursday next, when an easy victory for the Star is anticipated.
