DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB’S BIRTHDAY MEETING.

The Dunedin Jockey Club held their Birthday Meeting on Saturday and Monday, both v day.| being fine the attendance was good. The course was rather holding which caused;., thq overthrow of some of the favourites, .especially in the Birthday Handicap. The large sum,of passed through the totalizator during the two days, thus proving that there is more speculation among the canny Scots than further North. The races commenced with the cap Hurdle Race, two miles, for which seven started, Wairau pst 1 zlb winning by a couple of lengths from Ahua 12st 121 b; they both rose at the last hurdle together, but the latter stumbling, the light-weight to .get home first. The flag fell to a,good start, Tempest getting the quickest away, followed by Hazel and Retina. After going about three-quarters of a mile Retina took the lead On entering the straight she appeared to have it all her own way, but Palliser coming gamely under the whip .compelled Ray to sit down and ride his' but she having plenty left in her won easily by three-quarters of a length. The Tradesmen’s Handicap, one mile, brought out the large field of fourteen, and it was won by Kuline /st 31b, Moraine /st alb, second; Galtee 6st 51b, third. Also started, Retina /st nib, Von Tempsky /st 716, Inez /st sib, La Rose /st sib, Carronade /st Jib, Miss George /st 21b, Dormeur 6st 12ID, Lady Bell, 6st lolb, Wayland 6st lolb, Bay King 6st /lb, and Forest King 6st /lb. The "flag fell to a poor start, Kuline getting the worst of it. Inez led until the turn for home when began to close up. On entering the straight Kuline and Moraine challenged Inez, and after an exciting race the former got home by a head, a good third. Time, im. 50s. inside 10s, outside £5 Bs. For the Post Stakes, six furlongs, nine faced the flag. Derby getting the best of a bad start, won easily, Mayboy second, Miss Ann third. Time, im. 12s. Dividends—inside £2 18s, outside £2 6s;‘

The second day’s races commenced with the Selling Hurdle Race, one mile and a half, six Started for it. Inchkeith gst 21b won by three lengths from Kelpie’ gst, Mayboy gst, third. Trapper gst, Blackboy gst and Hector gst also started. Time, 3m. 6£s. Dividends —inside £3 ss, outside £3 5s 6d. The Provincial Handicap, one mile and a quarter—Blizzard Bst 41b, 1 ; Palliser Bst zlb; Occident 7st lolb, 3. Retina Bst 71b, Hazel Bst. Assyrian King 6st ulb, Coinage 6st ylb, and Crown Jewel 6st 71b also started. Palliser was the favourite with Blizzard next in demand. The flag fell to a good start. Coinage made the running to the distance when Blizzard closed up, followed by Palliser. Half way up the straight the winner came away and won comfortably by a length and a half ; Occident, who came with a great rush at the finish was „ a good third. Time, 2m. is£s. Dividends inside £3 10s. 6d, outside £3 10s. Peerswick beat Enfield, Derby and seven others by a length and a half for the Novel . Race!. Lady Bell led until entering the straight when Carronade and La Rose closed up; half way up Galtee came on full of running and won easily by a Couple of lengths. The Consolation was won by The Idler, Wayland, second; Miss George, third ; ten Others being behind them. The winner was objected to on the grounds of suspicious running. '
