The New Zealand bred horse Somniel, by Apremont from Hammock, was placed first in the thoroughbred section ,at the Bairnsdale Show last week. Caramut was awarded second prize, and Sheet Anchor third.— Sportsman. The parties behind Patchwork thought they had a good thing on in the South Auckland Cup on Saturday, and backed their horse at short odds. The black horse ho wever, although he got away first, was fairly beaten before half the Gup distance had been traversed. Patchwork was brought out again in the Tradesmen’s Plate Handicap later in the afternoon, but he did not run prominently, although he finished third.
