THE RACES TO-DAY.

The opening race meeting of the season will take place to-day at the Ellerslie racecourse, and should the afternoon prove fine there will be an excellent afternoon’s sport, and there is sure to be a large attendance. Special trains will leave the Auckland Bailway Station at 12, 12.30, 1.10, and 2.10. . . , Mr. Thomas Morrin will occupy the judge s box, and Mr. E. D. Halstead will wield the flag’ The totalizators will be under the control of Messrs. Adams and Andrews, while Hunter’s Artillery Band will discourse a programme of excellent music on the lawn. In the last issue of the Sporting Review I gave my notes and anticipations for the different events, but I was writing before the acceptances were before me. Since then, only one of the horses I selected to fill the places has dropped out. I refer to The Baron, who certainly appeared to me anything but badlv treated. I hear good accounts of My Queen, and I shall substitute her name in his place. Wallace. ■■■■ ■ ■ ♦ ■ — Old George McGregor, for many years the champion quoit player of the world, is dead. He was a wonderfully accurate hand at it, and had won literallv hundreds of matches. In his both year he could hold his own with 9 lb. quoits in first-class company.— After the sensational defeat of McAuliffe by Slavin, negotiations Were entered into with the view of bringing about a match between the Australian and John L. Sullivan, the Champion Of America, but the latter has declined to meet Slavin.
