TROTTING.

A great race took place at Detroit, on August 2nd, between the Californian stallion Palo Alto, by Electioneer, and the grey gelding Jack, by Pilot Medium. Palo Alto was considered to be the coming champion, but he broke repeatedly when called upon. The race was four one mile heats. First heat Jack won easily, in 2 min. 131 secs. Palo Alto breaking several times. Second heat Palo Alto won by two lengths in 2 min. secs., breaking the record of the track, beating the stallion record and equalling the fastest race mile of Maud S. Jack broke in the back stretch. Third heat, Jack won by three quarters of a length in 2 min. secs., Palo Alto breaking repeatedly. Fourth heat, Tuck won by a length in 2 min. 16 secs., having broke once while Palo Alto broke twice. The following is the fractionial time by quarters First heat—first quarter, o: 30; half, 1i three-quarters, 1: 4°f ; mile, 2:;5i, second horse, 2:16. Second heat —first quarter, 0:34!; half, i:o6f; threequarters, 1 ;4° ; mile > 2 : second horse, 2:14. Third heat—first quarter, o: 34#; half, 1:08; three-quarters, mile, 2:15; second horse, 2:15!. Fourth heat—first quarter, 0:34!; half, 1:073-; three-quarters, 1:42; mile, 2: 16; second horse, 2: i 6|.

Attempts lo swim the Niagara rapids axe still made. A foolish American tried his luck in the whirlpool recently, but when he reached the rapids the breakers dashed him against the rocks, and washed hint ashore close to the spot Where Captain Webb perished. He was only bruised a little by the rocks.
