The Duke of Portland drew Sanfoin and Surefoot in the big Derby sweep at the Turf Club.

It is not often a horse loses a furlong in a race and then wins, but at Ballarat recently Monarch, ridden by his owner, Scobie, baulked about a mile from home and yet managed to win. Scobie had to ride a desperate race to get- up to Nigger, and only succeeded in the last stride.
