June 9< Winter Races. IT would lx- hard to imagine a more perfect day for mid-winter than that of the opening day of the Winter Race Meeting. The grounds at EHeiMie wore a fine sight. Beds of bonlire Milvias were gorgeous splashes of colour. and the lovely antirrhinums at the top < nd of the lawn were a picture. \j'he 3rd Mounted Rifles Band played delightfully. Their Excellencies arrived very early, and were received by Mr 11.

The Merrymakers’ Dance. A most successful and enjoyable dance wae given by a committee of girls, in the Masonic Hall, Eden Terrace, last Wednesday evening. The committee included Misses I. Cranwell. Afternoon Teas. Mrs. Arthur Boult gave an enjoyable little tea, and the guests were charmingly entertained by the hostess, who played, ami Miss Phyllis Boult, who sang, as also did Mrs. W. H. Parkas. The Societies for the Protection of Women and Children and the Prevention ■of Cruelty to Animals have hit upon the attractive idea of having a promenade concert in the Town Hall on July 3rd to raise funds to extend and keep going their good works. T he programme is to be in charge of Herr Wielaert. T here is to be a Cafe Chantant in the sup per-roo-m, and pretty girks dressed in fancy costumes will sell sweets. At Home. A very pleasant evening was spent in Buchanan’s Rooms on Friday. May 30th, when Mis. Melling gave an “At Home” in honour of her daughter’s approaching marriage. Many friends availed themselves of the invitation, some coming from Waikato and Te Kuiti. where Mrs. Alelling was a- popular postmistress for some time. Music, vocal items and cards contributed to a pleasant evening. A dainty supper was provided. Mr Aitken, assistant-postmaster, in a felicitous speech, wished Miss Melling every happiness and prosperity in her future life, and presented her with a very handsome marble Hoc..< w'ith a silver plate inscribed: “Presented to ■!..
