HORTICULTURAL NOTES.

Poinsettias. Complaints are sometimes made that when Poinsettias are used in a cut state they quickly Hag after being placed in water. Thus is owing to the amount of milk-like sap which exudes from the cut portion, and it can to a great extent be obviated by plunging about two inches of the lower portion of the newlvcut stem into very hot water. Thus servos to seal up the pores, and so prevents any discharge.

Rhododendrons. It :k a popular fallacy that Rhododendrons require peat in the soil; yet peat i's 'by no means essential, provided that lime js al.sent. They never thrive in lime soil, but almost any other staple will grow them. A light sandy loam suits them splendidiy, and they often succeed fairly well in a heavy loam: but in dealing with the latter it is an advantage to cultivate it deeply, and to incorporate peat or leaf-soil.
