September 23. Reception to Visitors. * 1 IT last the long-looked-forward-to f | visit of Oscar Asche ami Lily A Brayton has materialised, and His Majesty’s has been packed each night with delighted audiences. The Shakespearean Societies of Auckland tendered a reception to the visitors. The function, which was very largely attended, was held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Saturday morning. Mr. T. W.’Leys presided, and. with Mr. B. Kent, received the distinguished visitors at the side entrance and escorted them on to the platform. Little Ruth Walker—Professor Maxwell Walker's daughter—presented Miss Brayton with a huge basket of violets. Speeches of welcome! were made by Mr. Leys. Mr. Kent, Professor Walker, and Mr. Montague. When Mr. Asche rose to respond it was some moments before he was allowed to speak. Strange as it may seem, the great actor appeared to be positively nervous. At the close of Mr. Asche's speech, Air. Leys called for cheers for the distinguished visitors, which were given with great goodwill.

Miss Lily Brayton looked very charming in a lovely black frock, and with this was worn a long coat of black charmeuse. the top part being composed of rich Oriental embroidered silk veiled with black ninon, the deep collar beirg finished with dull gold tassels. A large black hat with ospreys and a black veil, a lovely ermine muff and stole, conipleted a beautiful toilette. Tea to Bride’s-elect. Mrs. W. on Tuesday last. The guests of honour were live brides-rlect, two of whom wjll be married before this is in print—Miss AL Draper and Miss Stevenson, who were both married on Monday, 23rd. The three others were Miss Marjory Morrison, Miss Elaine Cooke, ami Miss Hill. The flowers were especially beautiful. In the drawingroom were bowls of prim roses and other spring flowers. The t eatable decorations were quite a feature of the party, carried out in a colour Scheme of pink and white. From the gas lights over the table was a light bamboo, covered with smilax, from which hung five wedding bells, composed of dainty white flowers, ami the table had pink camellias in silver vases ami bowls. The whole effect was very charming. A string band played delightfully in the large front hall, ami a very pleasant time was spent by the large number of girls who were there. Alfred Bayly, “Alakciiri,” Lady's Alilo, Remuera, gave a large progressive liridge party on Tuesday night of last week. There were eight tables arranged lor bridge. The supper-table was charmingly decorated with spring Howers. Airs. Bayly wore a beautiful frock of pale grey crepe de chine. The first prize was won by Airs. Wallnut, and Airs. I'he point-to-point races, which are always held at the close of the hunting season, after being postponed, were held last Saturday. I'he weather was most uncertain, but rough as it was there was a very large attendance. The locale was Mr. Gray’s farm, out Papa toetoe way. One of the most interesting events is the ladies' race, for which Sir Robert Lockhart presented a trojihy. Aliss Lloyd won in line style, Aliss Gill being second, and Miss Harris third. Unfortunately, the latter was thrown just as the last jump xvas cleared, and broke her collarbone. Among those riding were: Airs. Markham. Misses Nora and Rachel Gorrie, Miss Hilda Bloomfield, Aliss Dorothy Baker, and Miss Una Saunders. Driving and motoring were: Sir Robert and Lady Lockhart, Air*. U.
