June 14. Musical At Home. , - , On Friday afternoon Mrs. Wilding, “ Fownhope,” Opawa, invited a rnimber of her friends to a musical “ At Home,” which was a most enjoyable affair. Songs were sung by Mrs. Gower Burns, Mrs. H. H. Loughnan and Mrs. Beal«*<. Miss Audrey Gibson played accompaniments and pianoforte solos. Mrs. Wilding also contributed solos. A large “At Home” was given on Tuesday afternoon by Mrs. Nicholls at her residence in Mansfield-avenue,. to enable her friends to hear a pianoforte recital by Mr. Lancelot Lewin. The programme included items from the works of. Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Wagner, Schumann, Bach, and Beethoven. During the interval a sumptuous afternoon tea was served in the dining-room. The hostess was wearing a beautiful gown of pale grey silk crepe, the bodice richly braided and finished with a large bunch of violets. Amongst the guests were Mesdames Denniston, Reece. Diploma day celebrations were commenced this morning in connection with Canterbury College. The students formed a procession, and caused no end of amusement in their progress through the city. This afternoon at College Hall the diplomas will be presented, after which the Professors and heads of departments will entertain a number of guests at afternoon tea. In the evening the students are giving an entertainment in the King’s Theatre, which they intend to repeat again to-morrow evening. Personal. Captain and Mrs. Rolleston (Sydney) are the guests of Mrs. Rolleston at Park-terrace (Christchurch). Mrs. Henry. Wood left Christchurch for Dunedin on Wednesday for a short Mr. and Mrs. Donald McLean (Mt. Hutt) are spending a few days in Christchurch. They leave to-morrow for a visit to the North Island. Mrs. D. Macfarlane (Lyndon) has taken Mrs. Fulton’s house in Fendalton for the winter. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Ensor (White Rock) have been spending a week in Christchurch. Miss Nancy Chapman (Christchurch) motored to Dunedin last week. Mr. and Mrs. < . Cracroft Wilson have taken a house in Fendalton for the winter. Miss Nancarrow (Christ'clinrcli) is staying with friends in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. .Sinclair-Thompson (Woodbury) passed through Christchurch on their way to AVcllington. Miss B. Russell (Christcburih) is staying with her sister, Mrs. G. Marshall (Wanganui) until her marriage, which will take, place in Wanganui at the end of the month. The Misses Anderson {Christchurch) are staying with Mrs. Acton-Adams at Redcliffs. Mr. and Mrs. George Rhodes have returned to Christchurch from a visit to thg North Island. - Mrs. I’. Murray-Aynsley, who lias been staying in Christchurch, has returned to Methven.
