June 15th. Gift Social. The young lady members of the Presbyterian C'htnvh, anxious to assist the Presbyterian Orphanage in Wellington, arranged a gift social on Thursday afternoon. The affair was a very pleasant one, and an astonishing display of useful gifts was adequate reward for their thoughtful assistance. Those giving good help during the afternoon were Misses Nieol, Smith' (3), Tobbell, Blizzard, Arthur, Oxley, and the Rev. J. Dickson and Mrs. Dickson. In addition to children's songs, Mesdames Diekson, Arthur, and Jennings sang, and Miss Tobbell gave an appropriate recitation.

Card Party. On Monday evening Mr. and Mrs. Riddell entertained a few friends at their residence. Cards —bridge and five hundred—were played, and the evening passed away all too quickly. The draw-ing-room, was deeorated with beautiful chrysanthemums. , Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Riddell, Mrs. and Miss E. M. Allen, Mrs. Vickers, Mrs. Beswiek, Misses Dawkins and Maealister, and Mr. Rutherfurd.

Afternoon Tea. A number of ladies walked round to the -Freezing Works on Tuesday to visit Mrs. Healey and eall on her visitors. The weather was favourable for a long walk, and a very pleasant afternoon was spent. Mrs. Healey, Mrs, Ellis, and Mrs. Nichols sang pleasant little songs, and Miss Chambers played a selection. Those present were Mesdames Healey, Ellis, Smith, Allen, Vickers, Beswiek, Harris, Haslett, Storey, Williams, Ltteena, Chambers, Nieol, Misses Philpotts, Healey, Chambers, and Williams. Cantata.

The cantata entitled “Red Riding Hood's Rescue” was cleverly performed by a number of children who were trained by the Rev. C. Bottomley. The epidemic of mumps interfered considerably with the practices, but for all that and the changes; entailed the cantata was a decided success, and h crowded audience was greatly pleased with the performance. The principal performers were: “Mother,” Miss Violet Stunner; ‘‘Red Riding Hood,” Miss Irene Pollard; "Rose,” Miss Iris Pollard; “Buttercup,” Miss May Hance; “Robin,” Master T. L. Bottomley; “Woodman,” Master P.

Burrough; “The Wolf,” Master F. Martin, and a number of other children for the choruses. The second part was composed of songs, as follows: “When High the Mighty Billows Roll,” Mr. Burroughs; "Red,‘Red Roses,” and “Because,” Miss Maealister; “Off to Philadelphia,” and “Annie Laurie,” Mr. D. McCormick; "(Break,” and "Dreams,” Mrs. Gribble; recitation, “Ticket of Leave,” Mr. Henniker; quartette, “The Wandering Savayard,” Mrs. Nicol, Mis's R. Maealister, Messrs. Bottomley, and D. MeCormiek; duet, “A.8.C.,” Mrs. Willets and Mr. Gribble. Miss Burrough played the accompaniments, ami Mrs. Bottomley superintended the children and stage effects. Personal. Mrs. Ellis and Miss Frankish are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Healey at the Freezing Works. Nurse Stuart, who is a very capable and favourite nurse, has left for Wellington to study maternity nursing at St. Helen's Hospital.

Mr. Madsen has returned from a fortnight’s holiday in Featherston where he has had an enjoyable time playing golf. At the recent competitions held in Christchurch, Mrs. K. Allen was awarded second prize for an original story and third prize for an original poem, and Miss B. Allen third prize for an original story.

Mrs. and Miss Millington (Nelson), former residents of Pieton, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. E. Kenny, Waikawa-road.
