The largest single cheque ever paid by (•tie shipping company in London was handed over one morning in April in the hoard room of the l iiiuii-C astle line ip Fenvhtirch-street, in connection with the transfer of the Union-Ctudle froniMcssrfl. Donald Currie and Co. to the Royal Mat’. Stearn Packet Company. The cheque for £» r >, 173,572 16/, drawn on the Bank of England by the latter company, was handed over by Sir Owen Phillips, i chairman, to Nir Frederick Mirrielees and his son, partners in Messrs. Donald Currie. In exchange Sir Owen Phillips was handed a certificate for th* bulk of the sShareei in the I nion I astle C ompany, numbering nearly 140.000.
