March 16. Golf Croquet. A most enjoyable afternoon was spent at Mrs. Harry Valder’s, when about thirty of us took part in a golf croquet tournament. As those conversant with the game would know, we were divided into groups of fours, the winners in the first round, viz., Mesdames Yule, Furze, Lorie, and Mrs. Hurd-Wood, playing a combined game, which was won by Mrs. Furze, who then placed with winners of other games, viz., Mrs. Douglas, Miss Newell, and Miss Riley. This match resulted in Mrs. Douglas and Miss Riley coming equal, the latter winning the decisive two hoops. Mrs. Valder received her guests in Paris poplin, with tucked net yoke and sleeves, and -handsome point lace collar. Among those present were—Mrs. Douglas, in white silk blouse, black skirt with strappings of silk, heliotrope, hat; Mrs. Greenslade, smart white lace princess frock, black hat with lovely black plumes; Mrs’ Furze, black rep. gown with panels trimmed with fringe, black hat ; Mrs. Yule, pretty grey mousseline frock, with high-waisted effect and flowing girdle, large blaek hat with flowers; Mrs. Lorie, black trained gown, blaek hat; Miss Lorie, white embroidered frock, shady heliotrope hat; Mrs. Hurd-Wood, cream serge costume, pretty blue bat, and veil with blue spots; Mrs. P. White, graceful lavender gown, with long tunic, black velvet hat with black and white ribbon bows; Miss Rothwell, green costume, blaek hat; Mrs. Pountney, lovely white embroidered frock, black hat with roses; Mrs. Hyde sage green costume with floating .panel skirt, white hat with black wheat and roses; Miss Wallnutt (Auckland), grey cashmere gown, piped with cerise, black hat; Miss Carrie Wallnutt,
turquoise Wue dross with tnaiiteu binds, black hat; M*rs. Cork, amethyst gown, •panels turned back with silk, black hat; Mrs. Grant, rich black silk, pretty black bonnet; Mrs. Barugh, navy silk blouse costume, Tuscan hat; Miss Brown, white muslin, black hat wreathed with roses; Mrs. McLeod, tabac coat and skirt, black hat; Mrs. Frank Jolly, grey Japanese silk gown with pipings of blue, toque of blue crinoline straw with touches of black; Mrs. Tom Jolly, graceful pale grey frock with tunic trimmed with black silk and silver edging, touch of cerise on corsage, black hat with aluminium lace trimmings; Mrs. Osbourne, navy blue dress and black hat; Miss Bayly, cloth tailor-made, large hat with flowers; Miss Riley, electric blue frock with satin bands and cream lace; Mrs. Valder, sen., pale heliotrope gown with trimming of darker shade; Mrs. Tompkins, grey dress, hat to match; Miss 'Newell, navy poplin prettily piped with red, black hat; Miss McPherson, grey skirt and white silk 'blouse, hat with black bows. The Camp The Waikato A. and P. Show grounds have been quite a centre of attraction this week, for 800 men of the territorials have been in camp there. Gun practice has been the order of the day, the cannon drawn by eight horses and each accompanied by its ammunition waggon with six horses, with attendant soldiers, making quite a stirring sight. The Governor, Lord Islington, is expected to inspect the camp, and also to witness, some live shell practice across the swamp •beyond Frankton. Personal. Mrs. Herdman is spending a holiday in Auckland with her mother.
