DEATH OF MR JAS. DOUGLAS, V.M.H.

It is with the deepest regret that we have to record the death, at the age of 74, of Mr. James Douglas, V.M.H., which occurred at St. Nicholas’ Hill, Leatherhead, England, on the 26th November. Mr, Douglas was throughout his long and active life so steadfast in his devotion to florlcultural and horticultural pursuits, and, moreover, did such splendid work as to obtain for himself a commanding position in the world of horticulture and the esteem of all, and they are many, who have had the pleasure of his acquaintance. Mr. Douglas had of late years become best known as a florist but it should be remembered that, although he has been chiefly concerned with florists' flowers during the past twenty years or so, he achieved in the course of his career success of a high order in every department of gardening. For upwards of forty years he was one of the. leading cultivators of auriculas, and won prizes well nigh innumerable with them, and he was highly aw cessful in the raising of new varieties, a considerable proportion of these occupying a high position in. their respective classes. Mr. Douglas was not less successful in the raising, cultivation, and exhibition of carnations and pleotoea, and contributed largely to bringing ths yellow-ground flowers to the high position they have attained within raeent year*.
