A PLEASANT SURPRISE. Within the school the first Horticultural Show was held. -For several months past an energetic committee of progress’ re set tiers has been working hard i u the swecess of the event, and the tine display resulting must have more ilium compensated them for their perseverance. The manner in which every detail in connection with the successful Banning of a show had been provided for would have done credit to some of bur big events in the centres. We have »I tended many such exhibitions, and it 5s a great pleasure to be able to heartily congratulate the promoters on their arrangements. The display of vegetables was excel-

?ent. more especially in the fine quality n'nl keen competition in tho potatoes. 11 here were some fine strawberries. The lemons shown by Miss Shaw wore of bv;h grade, and carriOd tho first award. no children’s exhibits grown in the fcihool gardens were highly satisfactory, iand reflected credit on (lie headmaster, Mr. McLaurin. It was an agreeable Surprise to us to notice a fine display J” flowers of more than average qualiiy. Sweet peas were a special feature. Many of the stems of the Etta Dyke tuil Primrose Spencer were quite equal to any seen in Auckland, and wo hope r- 'inc of the successful exhibitors may "x- Induced to enter the lists at the Auckland carnival. vVe were extremely interested in the

rial plots of potatoes growing In ths fohool gardens. The manner nn which lao sections were labelled, the treatfi’eut la the way of manuring, spraying f'iid non-nianured recorded, tho clean, ‘•Ay way the plots were kept, was an tvldeiico that the new inslriictM' of the Board of Edircation knows his Lustiness, sal that the headmaster and hU pupils Ore intelligently following out the in*<ruct*on imparted. Wo camo away iff”! Wie exhibition delighted with what we had seen and hopeful that other

country diatrieta will follow th* good example net by Ramarama. A special word of praise is due to Mrs. Sharp and the secretary, Mr. Pilkington, who rendered yeoman service. Mr. Bennett, of Messrs. Bennett and Green, and Mr. Allan, of Messrs A. Yates and Co, acted as judges.
