NAPIER.

December 1. Personal. The last week has been very dull socially. Tennis parties, generally so popular at this time of the year, are not to be ’thought of with the terrible gales and changeable weather we have been experiencing for the hast month. As the date of the general elections draws near, the various ladies’ committees are working hard in support of their candidates. Last Saturday afternoon the members of the Bluff Hill Croquet Club gave a farewell tea to Mrs. Baxter and Mrs. Seaman. Mrs. Newton, secretaary of tho club, on behalf of the members, presented each with a handsome silver vase. Both these ladies will be greatly missed in Napier. Mt. and Mrs. Baxter leave today for Christchurch, where Mr. Baxter

Iras been appointed manager of the Loan and Mercantile, and Mr. and Mrs. Seaman go to Wellington. The news of the sudden death of Mre, Tonkin, wife of Captain Tonkin, caused much sorrow to her large circle of friends. Sir. and Mrs. Gould Smith have re* turned from their extended honey-moon trip to England, and have been spend* lug a few days in Napier. They leave to-night for Gisborne, their future home. Before leaving for Christchurch, iff, Baxter was presented by his friends with a solid silver tea service of the Queen Anne pattern, in recognition of his many public services to this district. Mrs. and the Misses Dalzell, aftej* spending several months in Napier, have left for tlie South. Miss May Williams has returned from Gisborne. Mrs. E. D. Holt, East Coast, has returned from England, and is staying with Mrs. Kinross White. The Misses McHardy, Hawke's Bay, have returned from England. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wilson ami son, Melbourne, are now in Auckland, and will shortly visit Napier. Mrs. and Misses Sheratt, Gisborne, were in Napier, on their way home from England. Mr. and Mis. Lawrie Rhodes, Watpawa, are visiting Napier. Mrs. Camplin Gray, Gisborne, is visiting her mother, Mrs. Hay. Mrs. Kinross White has returned from Wellington. Mrs. Bibby, Dnga Onga, is visitin" Napier.
