CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOE AT SYDENHAM.

'jhe early autumn show of the National Chrysanthemum Society was held on the fth'October at the Crystal Palace. A very bright display of flowers was made in th« centre transept. The schedule for |he early show is specially designed to encourage the exhibition of flowers grown in the open, and the prettiest effects are produced by the undisbudded sprays of flowers and buds in these classes. The principal class for a decorative display of chrysanthemums arranged on ‘the floor in .a semi-circular space of about 80 square feet was won by Mr. Frank Jlrazicr, Caterham, who made almost exclusive use of the light sprays of early flowering varieties. In the classes for Japanese varieties on- show boards Mr. 'A. Tate (Leatherhead) was first, with 1? distinct varieties, and Mr.' A. F. Blades (Reigate) with G. Mr. A. Tate was also first with a vase of Japanese blooms, a class which, although open to varieties of any colour, was contested only by whites, four of five exhibitors showing White Queen. The most successful exhibitor of early flowering varieties was Mr. J. Smellie (Busby, near Glasgow), who secured firsts for 12 and G bunches of pompons, 12 bunches of undisbudded blooms, and G bunches of disbudded, and also took firsts in two classes for vases of early flowering “singles.” Mr. W. A. Ballard (Leicester) was first with 12 bunches of disbudded blooms-grown in the open. The best of the standard sorts of early flowering varieties represented include Polly. Roi des Blancs, Carrie, Lillie, Jas. Bateman, Dolly Reeves, Hecuba, Hector, Caledonia, Elstob Yellow, Leslie, Nina Flick, and Diana, St. Croiitts, Canarii, Piercy's Seedling, and Scarlet Gem were the best pompons. A considerable number of novelties was shown, and firstclass certificates were awarded to the following:— Bronze Goacher, from Messrs Wells, Merstham; Miss E. Finch (terracotta), from Mr. F. Brazier; Emperor (bright crimson with gold reverse) and a pure white unnamed variety, from Messrs. Lowe and Shawyer.—“London Times.”
