October 28. Croquet. There was a large and representative gathering on the lawns of the Cambridge Croquet Club on Wednesday afternoon on the occasion of the opening of the lawns. The weather was good, and the lawns were gay with the bright summer frocks of the ladies. Mr. C. W. 'Mcßride (president) made a very happy speech in opening the lawns for the season. A number of games of progressive croquet were engaged in, the contests being very keen, most of the honours being easily carried off by the ladies. Mrs. Murray held the top score, with 25 points, Mrs. Alan Bell coming next with 22 points. For the men, Mr. Marshall scored 15 points, and Mr. Mcßride 12 points. A delicious afternoon tea was provided, and dispensed by the lady members of the club. Mrs. C. W. Mcßride, wife of the president, looked smart in pearl grey costume, and grey hat with osprey; Mrs. (Richardson, grey linen costume/ stylish grey hat, trimmed with grasses; Mrs. Murray, tussore silk eoat and skirt, smart hat, trimmed with Oriental scarf; Mrs. Hunter, white linen coat and skirt, white hat trimmed with blue; Mirs. Nico'll, pale pink frock, large grey hat trimmed with peaches; Miss Dunne, very smart green linen eoat and skirt, and grey hat trimmed with tiny blue roses; Miss Wells, smart Shantung dress, embroidered in blue, and large blue hat; Mrs. Alan Bell, mauve costume and mauve and black hat; Mrs. M. McDermott, embroidered linen dress, black hat with roses; Mrs. Croxford, blue linen frock, white hat trimmed with pale blue; Mrs. Nixon, mauve striped dress, black hat with roses; Mrs. A. (router, green linen costume, biscuit chip hat, trimmed with black; Mrs. McCullough, brown linen eoat and skirt, and brown hat; Mrs. M. Butler, grey linen dress and grey hat, trimmed with mauve; Miss Ward, striped grey and white coat and skirt, and large black hat; Mrs. Edmonds, white gown, (Hire hat trimmed with black• Mrs. Tudehope, blue costume, smart -black hat; Miss Irene Cox, navy blue costume, and blaek hat; Miss L. Cox, grey striped coat and skirt and black hat; Mrs. Bunyard, navy blue costume, biscuit-coloured- hat trimmed with black; Mrs. A. Gane, green coat and skirt, and black hat; Mrs. E. Souter, grey costume, smart grey hat; Mrs. Butler, green costume, green hat trimmed with brown: Mrs. Martyn, smart green costume and green hat trimmed with blaek. Personal. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Mackay, who have been staying at Te Arolia for three weeks, are at present staying with Dr. and Mrs. Roberts. Mrs. Dewsbury, of Onehunga, is staying with Mrs. Wells, of Oakleigh, Cambridge. Archdeacon and the Misses Willis have returned to Cambridge from Auckland, where‘the former ha, been attending tha Synod.
