PERSONAL NOTES.

The Rev. G. Brown, of Onehunga, senior member of the Auckland Presbytery. who has completed 51 years’ service, was entertained last week by the Presbytery at Buchanan's Cafe, about 30 persons beijig present. The Rev. A. Millar, Moderator', presided. A large numlier of speakers spoke in praise of Mr. Brown's work during the many years of his life as a minister. In reply, Mr. Brown gave some interesting recollections of the church in the early days. Mr J. W. Tibbs, headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, has been eonfined to his house for the past ten days by an injury’ to one of his ankles. He expects to resume his duties shortly’. The Christchurch Presbytery, decided to nominate the Rev. A. Cameron as Moderator of the General Assembly. Mr. J. Kirker, the general manager of the South British Insurance Company, who is now on his way back to the Dominion from the Old Country, is apparently much improved in health. According to a letter read at the annual meeting of the company last week, Mr. Kirker said he was feeling better and stronger than he had done for the past two years. The shareholders passed the general manager a hearty vote of thanks for his conduct of the company’s affairs. , - . The death occurred at his residence at Mt. Eden last week of Mr. John Jones, an old Auckland citizen, who has for many years carried on business as an auctioneer in .Victoria-street. Deceased was a native of England, and came to New. Zealand many years ago. ■*.e was at one time with Mr. W. J. Dowden, auctioneer, but about twenty years ago started the auctioneering business in Vivtoruvstreet that noiv bears his name. Some seven or eight years ago Mr. Jones broke his leg, and since then has not taken any active part' in the firm. He leaves a widow and an adult family. The"'funeral takes plate 1 on Sunday. ' Air. M. J. Heywood, who has been promoted to the management of the Auckland branch of the Government Life Insurance Department (vice Mr. W. J. Speight, retired), arrived in Auckland last week and is staying at Cargen. Mr. Heywood was the recipient of a handsome presentation on Friday by the agents "and staff of the Dunedin branch. Mr.’S. G. Smith was called upon to make - the presentation, and, > with many’ complimentary references to the successful career of Mr. Heywood, he handed to him a gold English lever watch gold chain, sovereign ease, and trinket. The watch had Mr. Hwwood’s initials embossed on the outside, and the inside plate bore rhe following inscription:—“To M. J. 'Heywood, Esq., from the agents' and staff cf Government Life office., Dunedin, October, 1911.” Mr. Smith’s remarks were endorsed by all present, some-of the agents who joined in the complimentary remarks having travelled over 200 miles to be present on the occasion. In feelingly responding, Mr. Heywood expressed his surprise andappreciation of the gift.
