Wellington Streets.

Whijje in Wellington during last week, ■ Mr. (■'.- J. Parr r made inquiry into municipal administration in ths Empire City,- an<f spent some time with Mr. Morton. Ctty Engineer. Speaking to a . I'Star? representative on his return tile Mayor - remarked that in Air. Mojtpn Wellington had an engineer second "to none in Australasia, and h? had conic to that .conclusion after having seen all of them during the last two months. While in Australia recently Mr. Parr Baid he saw no bytter streets than those in Wellington. .The four miles of wood blocking laid down eight years ago showed no signs of wear, largely attributable to tin- coating of tar and sand they received every year or two. The actual, wear on the wood blocks could not be measured, which Mr. Parr considered 'xxas ' very creditable, especially as there was heavy traffic on the main roads. Air. Morton had for some three years past iieefi laying down streets in tarniaeadttm. The Mayor saw three streets —Grey. Hrandon and Panama —-and they had l>eeh excellently done! He saw nothing better in" any of the Australian cities. Panama-street had been down pearly three yerfis. and though nothing had liven dime to it in' the meantime it still possessed an even surface, quite as smooth as Auckland's Queen-street. Mr. Morton was strongly in favour of the tar treat inept in making streets where the traffic was not heavy, but where the traffic was' heavy-he favoured either- wetod' blocking or i-ompresfied asphalt.
