NAPIER.

September 15th. G.F.S. At Home. St. Augustine’s branch of the G.F.S. gave a most successful “At Home” in the schoolroom on Wednesday evening. AU kinds of amusements were provided, including quoits, ping pong and nail driving competitions and an excellent musical programme, and altogether a most enjoyable time was spent. Songs were contributed by Mrs Lindo Levien, Dr. Ziele, Mr Hockley, and Air H. H Jones, a quartette by the Alisses King and Robinson and Messrs Robinson and Hill, a pianoforte duet by the Misses Paisley and Clarke, two humorous recitations by Mr Hobbs and an exhibition of club swinging by Miss Olsen were greatly enjoyed. Miss Snodgrass played the accompaniments. A delicious supper, provided by the members, was much appreciated. Amongst those present were: Canon and Mrs Tuke. Miss Lucy Tuke, Mrs ami Miss Ruddock. Mrs C. H. Mac lean, Misses Maelean, Miss White, Miss King, Mrs Gallwey. Mrs and Miss Snodgrass, Miss L. There has been quite a rush of children's parties this week, (h Wednesday Mrs Sproule gave a very large one ir honour of her small daughter's third birthday. All kinds of games were played and stories on the gramaphone were quite a novelty. Airs Cargill gave a school-girl’s party on the same afternoon, and on Thursday Miss Paisley gave a very jolly little party with competitions and pretty pictures for prizes. Bluff Hill Croquet Club.

The weather was most disappointing for the opening of the Bluff Hill Croquet .Club last Wednesday, but notwithstanding the elements quite a number of visitors were present, including several from the Napier and Hastings Clubs. Airs. .Bilton, who has acted as hon. secretary for the club for seven years, is leaving Nepier this week, and Mr Brabant on behal fof the members, presented her with a very pretty pearl and aquamarine pendant. Mr. Brabant then declared toe season opened, and asked Mrs. MeLernan (president), to strike the first ball. Mrs. AfcLernan entertained everyone to tea in the pavilion. Exhibition of Pictures. Miss Baldwin Warn and Miss Durrant, two English artists, issued invitations io a private view of their pictures in the ■AlhAiaeuni Hall on Wednesday afternoon, The collection includes some very striking portraits, a number of landscapes of New Zealand. Scotch and Italian scenery, and some lovely miniatures on ivory. Amongst those viewing the pictures wore: — Mrs. R. D. D. MT.can, Miss'M’LeanMrs. Levien, Mrs. Cargill, Canon and Mrs. Mayne, Mrs. Riddell, Mr. and Mrs. s. Riddell. Miss Hamlin, Miss" Hindmarsh. Mrs. P. T. M‘Lean, Mr. and Mrs. Ching. Mrs Polson is visiting Melbourne. Mrs Lilly (Pnhiatuii) is staying in Napier. Miss V. Dalzell is visiting Mrs Cooper, Havelock. Mis Prank Williams (East Coast) is on a visit to Napier. Miss Jaggar has gone to Christchurch for several week-. Miss Retemeyer left yesterday on a visit to Sydney. Miss Rutherford is visiting her sister Mrs Gallwey. .Miss E. Paisley has returned from Wellington. Airs Davis tanning and family are spending several months in Napier. Mr and Mrs Fred von Dadlezon have returned from Waipukurau. Miss May Hunter has returned from Thames. Mr. and Mrs. Logan and Mr. Frank Logan have returned from Dunedin. Miss Frew who has been spending several months with her sister, Mrs. Cronehaw. left this week for Christchurch. Miss Barnes and Miss V. Barnes have returned to Christchurch. Miss Hamlin has returned from a visit to Auckland. Miss Tonkin and Miss Laing are vis ting Wellington. Miss Ethel Paisley has returned from Wellington.
