HASTINGS.

July 14. Children's Ball. Last Friday night a children’s bull was held in the Drill Hall in aid of the Hastings High School prize fund. The hall, though large, was filled, adults as well as children thoroughly enjoying themselves. A very nice supper was provided by the ladies’ committee. The fancy costumes of the children added much to the scene, many being very pretty. Amongst those I noticed were: Miss Cora Lawless, Highland lassie; Miss Vera Britten, Kamo Tea Gardens; Miss Flo Hastings, sunflower; Miss Mona Banks, Teddy Bear; Miss Esma Sceats, Cupid; Miss Mary Hare, Maid of the Mill; Miss Lesta Bullick, harem skirt; Miss Dorothy Barnes, Red Riding Hood; Miss Rennie Fuzzard, milkmaid; Miss Winnie Fuzzard, Good Luck; Miss Ethel Thomas, red cross nurse; Miss Loma Maltby, chocolate poster; Miss Margaret Blackett, Irish girl; Miss Gertie Smith, hospital nurse; Miss Eileen Clarkson, Dutch girl; Miss Agnes Graham, Bluebell; Miss Renie Home, Folly; Miss Myrtle Spence, Highland lassie;

Miss Mollie Aldridge, Irish girl; Miss Marion Watson, Golden Locks; Miss Dolly Dickson, Juliette; Miss Dorothy Hawkes. Puritan maid; Miss \ ivian Banks, Moonstruck; Some of the boys’ costumes looked novel. Avery, Golliwog; Master Graham McCormick, Maori Chief; Master Donald Ross, cricketer: Master Frank Horne, nigger; Master Terry McKitteriek, ’Varsity; Master Keith Watson, bey scout. Hunt Club Ball.

Invitations are isuued for the Hawke's Bay Hunt Club ball, to be held on the 25th July. The following are the committee: Mesdames Lowry, Sunderland. Hassall, H. A. Russell, Stead, Tosswill, 0. Nelson, Groome, Maekersey, Carlyon, Mackenzie, Machivers, Miss Williams.

Personal. Mrs Allan McLean (Havelock North) left Hastings for Wellington on Tuesday for a short holiday. Mrs Fitzherbert has returned from Havelock North. Mrs and Miss Peddic have returned to Fielding. Miss Amy Seal has returned from Australia.

Mrs Oswald Nelson has gone on a z.isit to Wellington. Mi- and Mrs J. Faulkner left on Tuesday by express for Wellington., Mr J. Faulkner has gone to attend the Dental Conference which is being held in Wellington this week. Mr and Mrs Warren, “Tomoana,” have gone to Wellington for a short holiday. Mrs J. and Misses Williams, Havelock North, left Hastings on Tuesday for Wellington, where they join the Athenie for England. Miss Dobbie returned last night from her trip with the Sheffield Choir. Miss Duff (Havelock North) has returned from Dannevirke. Miss Braithwaite has returned from Dannevirke.
