July 14. Afternoon Tea. An afternoon tea was giver, at St. Andrew's manse on Friday by Mrs Mackenzie. The guests included: Mrs Deans, Mrs and Miss Julius, Mrs and Miss Ramsay (Dunedin), Mrs G. Westenra, Mrs Percy Cox, Mrs Frank Harris, Mrs and Miss Guthrie, Mrs J. Hay, Miss Hay, Mrs and Miss Mcllraith, Mrs Chrystall, Mrs Carrington, the Misses Bullen, Mrs A. Craig, Mrs Bloxam, and Miss Thurston. Tea was served in the dining-room. The table decorations were bowls of holly berries. A Dance. A small dance was given on Friday night by Mr and Mrs T. G. Russell, at their new residence, Papanui-road, in honour of .the officers of the Terra Nova, which left Lyttelton on Monday for a three months’ cruise. The Christchurch Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Hockey Club held a very successful' dance in Miss Cox’s Assembly Rooms on Thursday night, July 13th. Assembly Dance. On Wednesday evening Miss Selby held the second of her Assembly dances at the Town Hall, Sumner. Amongst those present .were: Miss Selby, wearing a frock of pink silk relieved with lace; Mrs Preston, black silk gown; Mrs Marliner, dove grey silk and lace; Mrs Hepworth, pretty tunic frock of pale pink merv.; Mrs L. Cowley (Methven), frock of reseda green silk, with overdress of white lace edged with green silk;-Miss Winks, tunic frock of peacock blue satin; Miss M. Allan, white satin, hand-painted with pink geraniums, and tunic of white chiffon edged with band of white satin; Miss N. Allan, pretty frock of white satin, and overdress of pale pink .ninon, finished at the foot with a wide band of insertion lace; Miss Fairburn, pale blue frock, with bands of chene silk; Miss Munro, reseda green silk; Miss Pinwell, pretty frock of dove grey silk, with tunic of grey jewelled chiffon; Miss Miller, frock of maize coloured silk* and tunic of paisley chiffon to match; Miss Lucy Williams, pretty frock of pale pink ninon, gathered into a hobble band of pink silk; Miss Cargill, black spotted net over black silk, relieved with a lumch of pink roses; Mrs C. Wood, white muslin tunic frock, and silver bead trimming; Miss Bruce, rose-pink silk, with black lace, finished at the hem with a broad band of black silk; Miss Cameron, pale pink silk frock; Miss Guthrie, blue poplin, with tunic of blue ninon edged with blue and silver embroidery; Miss Wiggins, deep blue velvet gown, relieved

with white lace; Miss May Jackson, frock of black velvet; Miss Biss, Princess froek of white satin; Miss Gossett, white glace silk, with lace overdress; Miss L. Croxton, brown silk frock, relieved with touches of pink; Miss Collins, saxe blue silk, with blue and black embroidery; Miss Bain, pale grey silk net frock. Amongst others present were: Misses Douglas (2), Pinwell, Restall, Smith, Read, Lawrence, Comerford, Messrs Elliott, Preston, Barns, Newton, Comerford, Green, Fryer, Bain, Francis, Goyne, Watts, Webb, Prins. Holmes, Wood, Render. A Concert. Mr. Sydney Williamson gave the second of his song recitals on Thursday evening at Alexandra Hall. Miss Alma Wells playing his .accomapniments. Amongst those present, were: Mrs. Deans, Miss Withner, Miss Park, Mrs. A. Campbell, Miss Kitson, Mrs. Evans, Miss Anderson, Miss Cotterill, Mrs. and the Misses Wells, Mrs. and Miss Thomas, Miss A. Kayse, Miss Shaulds. At the Theatre. At the Theatre Royal the Williamsor Company are having a highly successful season. “The Whip” gave place on Thursday night to “Henry of Navarre.” Amongst the various audiences I have noticed Mrs. and Miss Julius, Mrs. A. Elworthy, Mrs. P. Elworthy, Mrs. Deans, Miss Park, Mrs. Holmes, the Misses Holmes, Mrs. Savill, Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Westmacott, Mrs. Maefarlane, Mrs. and the Misses Burton, Mrs. Randall, Mr. and Mrs. Knight, Mr. and Mrs. G. Rhodes, Miss Humphreys, Mrs. E. Courage, Mrs. and Miss Peache. Personal. Mrs. Denniston (Christchurch) is visiting friends in Wellington. Mrs. Andreae (Christchurch) has left for Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Maefarlane (Lindon) left Christchurch last week for a motoring tour in the North Island. Miss Sheldon (Mt. Somers) is the guest of Mrs. Gorton (Christchurch). Mrs. Westmacott (Woodbury) is staying with Mrs. 11. H. Loughnan (Avonside). Miss Sinclair-Thompson (Geraldine) is the guest of Mrs. Bowden (Papanuiroad) . Mrs. Arthur Elworthy, Mrs. Percy Elworthy, Mrs. Maurice Harper, Miss Orbell, Jlrs. J. R. Loughnan, Mrs. and Miss Hope, who have been staying in Christchurch, has returned to Timaru. Mrs. Melville Jameson, who has been for a trip to Japan, passed through 'Christchurch len route for her home in Timaru.

Mr. and Mrs, Leonard Malet, who have been visiting friends in Christchurch have returned to Clearwell.

Mr. and Mrs. Green Macdonald and Miss O’Brien Hodge have returned to Orari.

Captain Malet, Mrs. Malet, and Mrs. Randall have returned to Christchurch from the South.

Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Reeves (Rangila'taj have been spending a few days in Christchurch.

Mrs. and Miss Wells (Amberley) are in Christchurch.

Major and Mrs. Spencer (South Canterbury) were staying in Christchurch last week.

Mrs. E. Turrell (Christchurch) and Miss Raine (Timaru) left on Thursday for Rotorua.

Mrs. J. Perry (Auckland) is the guest of Mrs. George Rhodes at Elmwood, Papanui-road. Mrs. Donald McLean (Mt. Hutt) is staying in Christchurch for a few days.
