NAPIER.

July 7. Book Tea. Mrs. and Miss Murdoch gave a book tea last Saturday afternoon. The guests all arrived wearing a badge representing the title of a book. Some of these badges were most amusing, and when explained seemed so evident one could not help wondering why they had not guessed it immediately. The first prize was won by Miss Frew. Amongst the guests were Mrs. Crawshaw Mrs. Mason, Mrs. Herdman, Miss Paisley, Misses Sutton, Miss Hetley, Miss Snodgrass, Mrs. Morgan, Misses Hill, Miss Gillies, Miss Neville, Misses Brown and Miss Ruddock. Competition Tea. The Misses Bernau gave a “ competition tea ” on Saturday afternoon. The prizes were won by Miss S. Rutherfurd and Miss E. Maclean. Amongst the guests were: —Mrs. Ziele, Mrs. Levien, Misses Bowen, Miss Pollen, Miss Anderson, (Christchurch), Miss S. Rutherfurd, Misses Maclean, Miss Sandtman, Miss Maud, Miss M. Hindmarsh, Miss Snodgrass, Miss Hansard, ’and Miss Fell. The Runaway Girl. The Napier Amateur Operatic Society gave their first performance of " The Runaway Girl” at the Theatre Royal last Tuesday evening, before a large aujdieiiee. The opei’a was beautifully staged, and the whole performance was an entire success, and n (fleets great credit on the society. Amongst the principals was Miss Rosewarne, whose singing was much appreciated, her principal solos being “ Sly Cigarette,” “Beautiful Venice ” and “ The Singing Girl.” Mrs. Jowett is well known as a local amateur and her singing and d’aneing is always a dainty performance. Miss Higgins scored a great success as “Carmenit’a.” The opera ran for four nights, the house being packed ou each occasion. Personal. Mrs. Hill is visiting Gisborne. Miss Large has returned from Wellington. Mrs. Aliek Williams (St. Lawrence), who has been visiting Napier, returns to her home to-morrow. Miss Murdoch is visiting Auckland. Mrs. Frank Hutchingson 'and Mrs. Absolam are spending some weeks in Napier. Nurse Dalrymple has resigned her position in the Napier Hospital, and is visiting her sister, Mrs. Clark, of Pctonc. Miss Ada Williams (Pukehou), is on a visit to the Etist Coa-t. Miss Spencer is visiting Napier.

Mrs. Von Dadlezon and Mr. Herman Von Dadlezon have returned to Napier, and are residing in G 1 idstone-road. Miss McVay is visiting Wellington. Miss Bfernes is visiting Gisborne. Mr. and Mrs. Craig are visiting Invercargill.
