Truly American.
New and startling ideas, not devoid of lo«ie. are constantly emanating from America. Not long ago it was the renunciation by a bride and bridegroom of a wedding present of £-100.000 ottered by a steel magnate, and refused bevati.se the young couple desired to lead the simple life. Now a New Jersey doctor proclaims that the engagement ring is a relic of barbarism and erf the servitude of womankind, and that it is nmeh more to the purpose that the lady who is to live with him on an equality, as companion and helpmate, should receive the "rarks of Ibsen and Bernard Shaw wherewith to ornament her mind. This is wholly admirable. We wait with confidence now for the appearance of the prophet and teacher who shall ruthlessly expose the barbarism of giving wedding presents that are absolutely useless.
