GISBORNE.
January 3. The Holidays. The day following New Year's Day * Monday) turned out a must glorious day, and picnic parties were to be seen in every direction, ’busses, buggies, and conveyances of all descriptions being utilised to convey the holiday-makers to their different picnic spots. The river also was dotted with boats and their loads of passengers. A great number of people journeyed to Otoko to view the railway works now in progress, some going by the 7 a.m. train and going up to Rakarou, a splendid day's trip, and educative as well, the country through which the train will pass being so splendid. Mrs. \V. C. Ensor gave a most en joyable picnic up the railway line, a large number of her friends being present. Karaka Races. Tire Karaka races attracted a large number of people, over 1000 being present. Amongst those attending were: Mesdames Buekley, K. Sherratt, Donner, Scott, Jackson, Stephenson-Shield (Hastings), Murphy, Lusk (Napier), Misses Bennett, Sherratt (3), Monekton (Wairarapa), Symes, Lusk (Napier), Horner (West Coast), Evans, Dormer, Scott, ete. Personal. The Misses Kennedy (Napier) are at present, staying with their brother, Mr. A. F. Kennedy (Gisborne). Miss R. Rees (Sydney) is spending tho Christmas holidays with her mother (Mrs. W. L. Rees). The Misses Sherratt (Gisborne) and Pahtutahi are visiting "Raiigitira,’’ the residence of Mr. and Airs. Pattullo, Karaka. Mr. Rolleston (Christchurch) is at present visiting friends in Gisborne.
