Hawke's Bay Tennis Championship. January 6. The annual open championship and handicap tournament commenced at the H.B. Courts last Saturday, and ‘continued on Monday and Tuesday, but some of th© ladies’ events are still unfinished, and will most likely be played off to-morrow. Afternoon tea was kindly provided by the Club, and much enjoyed by all the visitors. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Edgar, Mrs. Ching, Mrs. Kettle, Miss Kettle, Mrs. Arthur Kennedy, Mrs. Dinwiddie, Miss Dinwiddie, Miss Sutton, Misses Lever (2), Mrs. Clark, Miss Clark, Miss MeLean, Miss Coates, Mrs. A. C. Russell, Misses Wellwood (3), Miss Hamlin, Miss Meredith, Mrs. Waddel, Miss Davis, and many others. Visit of the Rotorua. The N.Z. Shipping Co.’s fine new steamer- Rotorua paid her first visit to Napier this week. Captain Sutcliffe has many friends in Hawke’s Bay, and, notwithstanding the very heavy sea that was running, numbers of people were glad to accept his invitation to go out and inspect the Rotorua, She is certainly a most beautiful vessel. The decorations throughout are quite lovely, and for those who are fortunate enough to be able to travel with every comfort there is a delightful suite of state-rooms most daintily furnished. A nursery, with well-fillled toy cupboards, is one of tho many innovations to be found on the Rotorua. Hawke's Bay Children's Home. The distribution of prizes to tho children of the H.B. Children’s Home took place on Wednesday afternoon. The prizes were given away by Dr. T. C. Moore, who said it spoke well for the institution that, being their medical officer, he had only been called in once during tho year. A musical programme was contributed by the children, and at tho conclusion of the prize-giving a remarkably happy, healthy little baud re-

ceived gifts from a lovely Christmas tree. During the afternoon Dr. Moore made feeling reference to the death of Mrs. F. W. Williams, their late President. Amongst the many friends and supporters of the Home present were: Mrs. Randal, Miss Davenport, Miss K. Williams, Mrs. Craig, Miss M. Williams, Miss Hunter, Mrs. F. Hutchingson, Mrs. Hansard, Mrs. amt Miss Rutherford, Miss Thornton, Miss Aplin, Revs. J. Asher and C. Lawrie.

Personal. Canon Mayne and Mrs. Mayne and family are spending a month at Taupo. Miss Meredith, Wairarapa, has been the guest of Mrs. Hamlin. Mrs. Troutbeck has returned from Rotorua. Miss Irvine (Dannevirke) is the guest of Mrs. Dinwiddie. Miss Chapman and Miss Phillips have lefj; for Taupo and Rotorua, Friends of Miss Geary iu Napier will be pleased to hear of her wedding, which is to take place in Auckland early in January. Mrs. Arthur Gore has returned from Rotorua, and leaves shortly for Japan. Mr. and Mrs. Biddell and family (Wellington) are on a visit to Napier. Mrs. and Miss Wood have returned from a delightful visit to Australia. Before leaving for Vancouver, Miss Daisy Simpson received a presentation from the staff of Williams and Kettle, and from the principal of the firm. Mrs. Levien is on a visit to Palmerston.

Miss Gaisford (Dannevirke) is visiting Napier. Mrs. Stopford left yesterday on a visit to the South Island. Miss Sutton is visiting her sister, Mrs. Stuart, Christchurch. Mrs. Dintviddie is visiting Dunedin.
