Canterbury causes enough commotion and strife to make an outsider believe it was “the province” of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis world; but it is a peculiar thing that few of the many fine

players in Christchurch are ever encouraged by the local Association to attend the New Zealand championship. Players line Ollivier, Goss, Pearse, Kiver, and Borrows are invariably to be found competing at the very ably conducted South Canterbury meeting at Ashburton, but it is greatly to be regretted that men of tneir calibre are not taking part in the N.Z. Tournament, where the standard of plav is more in accordance with their ability than that of the minor tournaments. A lot of expense has been entailed by the asinine question of representation on the New Zealand Council, money that would have been put to a much more useful and patriotic purpose had the Associations concerned defrayed the expenses (or at least part) of-their leading players, so as to have ensured their attendance at the big championship tournament. Commenting on the same subject (New Zealand championships), a Dunedin writer, if you please, says that the tournament threatens to resolve itself into a contest between a few North Island players and H. A. Parker. It is almost like deciding the North Island championship in the South Island'. “.Romulus” characterises that statement as “pretty cool”—doubtless whoever wins the championship will not even be New Zealand champion! The following players were on scratch In the various events at the Handicap Tournament held' on the Day’s Bay courts this week:— Men’s Handicap Singles: E. Y. Redward (Newtown). Men’s Handicap Doubles: E. Y. Redward and F. A. Morris. Ladies’ Handicap Singles: Miss L. Morgan (Brougham Hill). Ladies’ Handicap Doubles) : Misses L. Van Staveren (Victoria College) andl E. Hannah (Wellington) . Combined Handicap Doubles: E. Y. Redward and Miss Webb (Newtown). C. F. Quinnel], the ex-Brougham Hill player, appears to be in good form this Beason if his performances for West End, along with Swainson, another Southerner, in the Auckland inter-club competitions, are any criterion. Although not in the first flight, Quinnell was a very reliable player, and' he was a wellknown figure on the Day’s Bay courts, where his five set matches with Hawkins never failed to provide a keen contest andl much merriment.

Wellington competitors at the Tournament just concluded at Blenheim had paired as follows for the New Zealand Combined Championship Doubles: —H. W. Brown and Miss Nunneley, F. M. B. Fisher and Miss Travers, J. C. Peacock and Miss Simpson, G. Smythe and Mrs. Marchbanks.

The following Tournaments were timed to conclude this afternoon (Wednesday) : N.Z. Championships, Hastings Championships and Handicaps, South Canterbury Championships and Handicaps, Southland Championships and Handicaps. Those down for decision during the coming week are: —Marlborough Championships and Handicaps, Hawke’s Bay Championships and Handicaps, Pahiatua Championships and Handicaps. A. Davey, well-known in Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika, and present Champion of Marlborough, has been transferred from Blenheim to the Feilding branch of the Bank of New South Wales. Davey is only a young player (he learnt his tennis at Nelson College), but he has had a great partiality for tournaments, as a result of which ho shows signs of one day developing into a top-notcher.

The final of the Thorndon Club's Combined Handicap Doubles has been reached, and the contestants will be O. ProuseMiss Nunneley (owe 15 3-6) v. Thomp-son-Miss Simpson (rec. 15). C. R. Diaher, Hon. Secretary of the Muritaa. Club, left last week on a fortnight’s holiday to Auckland, for the benefit of his health. V. 11. Sanson, a life member of the same club, arrived in Wellington, on Christmas Day from Blenheim, in order to spend a brief holiday with his people. Another item of interest to the suburban players is the success of L. 0. Harton and A. IL R. Hood in passing the final and intermediate examinations (respectively) of the New Zealand Society of Accountant*.
