Ohaknne. — The maker calls the score, the other side doubles. Any player on the maker’s side can re-double, and this can go on indefinitely. J.C., Newton. — Culprit has won the Stepniak Stakes. C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, irwell Handicap, aud Electric Plate. The gelding Prophet is to be ridden in the Auckland Cup by L. Morris. Provocation has been scratched for all engagements at the Manawatu meeting. The San Fran mare Mary Ann is now an inmate of P. Conway’s stable, at Ellerslie. The Soulr mare. Princess Soult, is being indulged in a spell. Tliere are now nearly '2OO racehorses in training. in Holland. Mr. T. .Cunningham has purchased the Obligado filly. Oboe, from her late owner. The Auckland horseman. C. Brown, has been engaged to ride John in the Auckland Cup.F. Stenning is handling an exceptionally well-grown twO-year-bld colt by Monoform — Lady Athol. 11. Gray, who rode Bridge to victory in the N.Z. Cup, is to have the mount on the son of Merrrwee in the Auckland Cup. Bootie was scratched for all engagements at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting at 11.40 last Wednesday. Mr. Wallace, of Mangere, has disposed of the filly by Wairiki from Leo Delaval to an Australian buyer. Mark Ryan has made a good recovery from his .recent accident, and was riding work again on Saturday morning. Mr. S. Pitt, owner of Red Lupin, writes from Stratford that the statement that he had refused au offer of 500 gs for the son of Lupin is incorrect. How many times after an apprentice has had his first ride does he ride the race over agaau to the other ’ kids” in the stable? The bookmakers will be operating on two days of the Takapuna J.C. Summer Meeting. and then “the place that knew them once will know them no more.*’ Consequent on his good gallop on Thursday morning. Paisano has shortened in price for the Auckland Cup. It takes very little to make a horse favourite nowadays.

The Regel gelding Regain has been physicked since the Taka puna meeting, and hats been having an easy time of it in consequence. Amongst the whiners at the recent Kensington (Sydney)* meeting was Ind Coope, which is returned as by Explosion — Laetitia. The St. Clement’s mare St Maria wrenched her fetlock while competing at the recent Te Awamutu meeting, and is to be treated to a lengthy spell. The Napier-owned Kopu still retains his position as favomite for the Auckland Clip, and is going on as well at Ellerslie as*his best friends could wish. After being passed in at auction last Friday. the gelding Michaeloff was disposed of privately for 35gns, at which figure he should be a cheap horse. The 'St. Paul gelding Tanekaha was brought from the South by the Rarawn last week, and has gone back into his old quarters at T. A. Williams’. One half rhe light-weight jockeys riding horses nowadays are afraid of their lives on their mounts, and this is probably why there is so much unreliable running. The Menschikoff gelding. Michaeloff. is being trained at Ellerslie by h’s new owner, the gentleman who runs under the assumed naniK of Mr. 11. Sydney. It is reported in the South that the Monaco, gelding Te Aral is to be taken across to Australia to compete in the V.R.C. <4rand National. Te Arai is stilted io be in the best of health.. The las»t of Soult’s progeny made its appearance at Glenora Park this week, when Cloclete. { by Seaton Delaval—La Cloche, foaled a colt to the defunct son of Sr. Simon. It is reported .t-har. the Multiform , colt, Sunburnt, after fulfilling his engagement in 9 he Palmerston North Stakes, is to be brought to Auckland to contest the Royal Stakes. The fact that the bookmaker ceases to exist after January 31 has caused all the small clubs to endeavour to get their meetings over before that dare, and it will be difficult to prevent clashing. The latest English mall to hand brings word of the death of Captain Hope Johnstone. who had the honour of riding the first winner which carried the late King Edward Vll.’s colours. Space at Ellerslie for visiting horses is at present at a premium, and in order to accommodate his friends, the Green Lane trainer. John Rae, has been compelled to erect half a dozen new boxes. The ex-Auekland horse, Aimwell, which has been something of a disappointment, has again changed hands, and is now owned by Mrs. Iliggott, wife of the well known Hutt trainer. It transpires that Provocation showed signs of having jarred one of his tendons after winning the Fcilding Stakes, and although he was not actually lame. Mr. Bidwill did not deem it advisable to work him, aud he was struck out of all his immediate engagements. Mr. Bidwill’s colt. Ovation, of which great things were expected, has developed .strangles, so it will be seen that the Wairarapa sportsman’s bad luck still Sticks to him. Coincidences arc frequent iu racing, ami the latest in this connection is the performance of I-uxton on Tuesday morning. Luxton is trained by J. Chaafe, jr.. who had a similar experience with Prophet, exactly twelve months ago, when the Son of St. Paul left the track at the same i»lace as Luxton did on Tuesday. As was the rase with Luxton’s rider, the l»oy on Prophet also escaped with a shaking, while the hoise was also unhurt. Would murder under the following conditions be justified? A well-known sport rushed up to a punter, who had a fair amount about Bridge for the Auckland Cup, and said: “Hello’. Have you heard Mr. Watt is not starting Bridge in the Cup?*’ “Oh lor!” said the crestfallen punter, “how’s that?” “’Charlie O’Connor is starting him,** replied rhe sport, and then he hurried away, and still lives to work hi* joke on to punters with an inquisitive turn of mind. Southern owners are finding some difficulty in making satisfactory arrangements for uie conveying oi their horses uorth-

wart! for the A.R.C. Rummer Meeting, and the consequence is that the visitors are very slow in putting in an appeaianee at Ellerslie this year. To the ordinary layman. it would appear that it would pay the Pailway„ Department to run a special horse train from Wellington and Napier to Auckland, hut evidently the Authorities are not of that way of thinking, as no move has been made in that direction. 4t the last meeting of the Hawke’s Bav Metropolitan Committee, the chairman. \(r. G. Hunter, drew the attention of the committee to a statement made by Mr. Ross, M.P. for Pahiatna, in the discussion upon the petition of Mrs. Treweek, of Palmerston North, in regard to the payment of the dividend on three totalisator tickets, which she claimed to have purchased on a winning horse at the Woodville Jockey Club’s February Meeting. Mr. Ross stated that the Metropolitan Committee was primarily responsible for having wrongly advised the Woodville Club. No advice was given to the Woodville Club by the Metropolitan Committee, who had no power under the rules to give advice, even had it been asked for. Further than this, the Metropolitan Committee had no power to vary or review any decision given by a country club In any dispute or question affecting the payment of totalisator dividends, the Rules of Racing pepviding that the decision of stewards shall in all such be final. It was to be regretted, the committee thought, that Mr. Ross should have made an inaccurate statement reflecting upon the Metropolitan Committee without having made himself acquainted with the Rules of Racing or the facts of the < ase. The proprietors of the Allendale Stock Farm. Mentone, recently dispatched their manager, Mr. Andrew Robertson, tti America, for the purpose of purchasing trotting and thoroughbred stock. Mr. Robertson has bought about 20 trotters, including mares and stallions with blood which has up to now never been represented in Australia. There are. for instance, stal lions aud mares by Chimes, Ormode, Jay Bird. Moko. Walnut Hall. Tod Mac and Boreal -prominent sires in the Stakes. The trotters have speed on both sides of their pedigrees. One of the lots purchased by Mr Robertson is a colt by Mazagan. by Martagon. from Maize. by Hampton. Mazagan. when in England, won the Goodwood Cup and the Jockey Club Cup. defeating Merman. A filly by Mazagan is also included in Mr. Robertson’s purchases. She is out of Wild Bess, by the only American-bred English Derby winner. Iroquois. The shipment also includes several youngsters by Oddfellow. a sou of Barealdine and the flying Geheimniss, by Rosicrucian. Among them are two full sisters to Berry Maid (winner of the Toboggan Handicap). Rubus, the dam of these* fillies, was a famous performer. She descends from what is known in America as the Dance family, the imported ancestress of which was Galopade. by Cat ton. Others by Oddfellow purchased were -the .t^vo-year-old filly Feironelle and her yearling full sister, both out of Pepita. by Hanover, from the English mare Peter ville. by Peter. An American writer says : "What better could .be asked for than a filly by a Matchem stallion opt.„of a Herod mare. and she out of an Eclipse mare? I predict that at some future date Pepita’s daughters by Oddfellow will found a family of their own in Australia, aud that Australian breeders wjll thank their lucky stars that Mr. Robertson secured two fillies of this sort.*’ Mr. Robertson also purchased what are described as two grand mares—Miss Sain ami Hasty Agues. Hasty Agnes won many races, and is by Mr. Belmont’s sire, Hastings, who more than once headed the list of winning stallions in the States. Miss Sain ran a mile in 1.37 4-5. and is by imported Sain out of Miss Baker, dam of three good winners. Sain was by St. Serf out of The Task, by Barealdine. A meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Committee was held on Tuesday, the Hon. E. Mitchelson presiding. The following licenses were granted:—Trainers: J. I. N. Mackenzie. M. McKinnon, C. J. Wyatt. E. Hillary. Jockeys: K. Campbell, G. Keenan, Percy Moore, Hy. Mitten. E. Heudrey. J. I. N. Mackenzie, J. W. Jennings, Jos. Williams. The following programmes wer«-passed:-Matamata Racing Club, January 19; Bay of Plenty Jockey Club, January 30; Opotiki Jockey Club, Fetiruary 15; South Auckland Racing Club, February 24 and 25 It was agreed to recommend the conference to allow the Thames Jockey Club to change their dates from December 26 and 27 to December 27 and 28. The Papakura Raving Chib was granted permission to race on January 21 and the Te Puke Jockey Club on January 26. The Huntly Racing Club’s programme for January 21 was passed, they to be allowed to change their date to January 28 if they so desire. The A.R.C. Committee met subsequently, when the following transfers were passed: From J. B. Reid: To D. O'Brien, bay filly, lyr, by Boniform —Cyre; 11. The Christ, hurch Racing Club opened its Summer Meeting under the most unfavourable conditions to-day. rain falling steadily throughout the afternoon. The weather ■was responsible for the free use of the Scratching pen, and th" state of the track affected many of the horses. Though the racing was thoroughly interesting, the big race, the Dominion Handicap, drew the disappointing field of five, and was not particularly impressive. CToroniform winning easily. The Multiform gelding ran as good a race as he did when he won the Otaio 3Plate at Riccarton, and is evidently likely to do good service over journeys. Genius showed improved form, but Outlander was again disappointing, the going being against Siim. The Nursery Handicap was notable for a good performance by Query, a useful Fon of Stepniak or Royal Artillery and Irene., the dam of Petrovna and Master ■Alix. Query ran a good race behind the speedy Culprit at Riccarton last month, and Ito should pay his way in handicap events. Some of those he beat to-day will see a better day, the heavy going being especially Croubiesome to green two-year-olds. The Koya I Ar; illery—Saucer colt. Crown Derby, pot the first win of his career in the Maiden SPlate. He has more than once shown proacnising form, and he may be heard of again. He is a half-brother to Porcelain, which died before he had shown his best, but .will be remembered as having run a couple t>f fine races against the great Achilles. Grand Slam, the full-brother to Bridge. confirmed his Titnaru and Hororata form by twinning the Welter in good style from Gold Braid, which is showing better form. Tn •the Flying Handicap the speedy mare Queen of Spades put up a remarkably good performance. This daughter of Sant Ilario is apparent lj' learning to stay with age. (Among the field behind her was Busy Land, which has been running prominently of late, but cut up badly in the heavy going, ■fiant Rosaleer, which won the Middleton Handicap, has always had a great private but has consistently failed to reproduce his track form. To-day, however, he got off well, and galloped resolutely all jfhe way. Similar remarks apply to the jwinner of the Avon Handicap. AH Guns, which has often galloped well, only to fail in the last pinch. Among those behind him was the disappointing mare. Boutade, which is evidently on the improve.
