December 16. Garden Party. A garden party was given by Aliss Gerard at her residence, “Willowbrook,” Fendalton. The hostess, who stood on the lawn to receive her guests, was wearing a lovely gown of cream lace ornamented with appliques of silk, Tuscan hat trimmed with blue velvet and buttercups; Aliss R. Gerard, a cream crepe de chine froek, large black hat with white wings; Mrs. Alurray-Aynsley wore a satin gown, shot with mauve and light green tints, veiled in ninon, hat to match; Mrs. G. Rutherford, costume of mole coloured cloth, straw hat with violet flowers; Aliss Rutherford, white embroidered muslin froek, and white hat; Airs. G. Gerard, pale blue ninon hemmed with satin, blue hat to match; Airs. Julius, black satin veiled with chiffon, black and gold bonnet; Airs. Hansell (Wellington), a Russian costume of heliotrope linen, black hat; Airs. A large marquee stood on the lawn, where strawberries and cream, delicious tea and light refreshments were served. Another Garden Party, Airs Aleredith-Kaye (Papanui-road) gave a garden party in honour of Bishop Averill (Waiapu) and Mrs Averill, who are staying with Mrs Kaye. Unfortunately, the weather interfered with the out-of-door arrangements, and the guests were entertained in the house. Afternoon Tea. An Afternoon Tea was given on Friday by Mrs Stead (Strowan Park) in honour

of the christening of Mrs Russell Grace's baby daughter. The guests included several children. Hall gave a tea party, each guest being requested to bring a doll dressed in paper, a prize to b ■ given to the b st dressed one all the dolls to go to the bazaar in aid of the Girls’ Hostel. Airs. Pyne and family have returned to Christchurch from their visit to Enoland. Airs. J. Barker (Woodbury) is spending a few days in Christchurch. The Bishop of Waiapu and Airs. Averill have been the guests of Mr. Alere-dith-Kaye at Papanui-road. Other visitors to Christchurch include: Airs. Hansell (Wellington), Airs. A. Amongst the departures were: —Mrs. Wilson, wife of Dr. Wilson, of the Antarctic expedition, left for England yesterday (Thursday), December 15; Miss AL Williams has returned to Geraldine; Air. and Airs. Henry Harper have returned to Ashburton; Mr. and Mrs. Guyon Alacdonald have returned to Orari.
