December 9. Luncheon Party. A small luncheon party was given by Mrs. Wilding, “Tawnhope,” Opawa, on Tuesday. The guests included Mrs. Ranald Macdonald, Miss Macdonald, Mrs. J. D. Hall, Airs. C. Dalgety, Mrs. Westmacott (Woodbury), Mrs. Anderson, and Mrs. C. Wilson. Our Naval Visitors.

On the same day a cricket match was played on the Hagley Park Cricket Ground between a scratch team of Christchurch players and a team from the men-o’-war which are in port. The local team won comfortably. The excellent band of the H.M.s. Powerful contributed greatly to the enjoyment of those present, amongst whom 1 noticed: Mrs. and Miss Boyle, Mrs. George Rhodes, Mrs. and Miss Symes, Mrs. and Misses Moore, Mrs. Golomb, Mrs. C. F. Thomas, Miss Thomas, Mrs. Arthur Elworthy (Timaru), Miss Macdonald, Mrs. and Miss Wilkin. Miss Broderick, Miss Cotterill, and Miss Strachy. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. 11. 11. Loughnan. River Picnic.

A river picnic was given on Wednesday afternoon by Mrs. C. F. Thomas. The boats startl'd from the Hospital Bridge. The guests included: Mrs. Nanearrow, Miss Nanearrow, Miss Thomas, Mrs. G. F. Ronalds, Miss B. Russell, Miss Craeroft Wilson, the Misses Anderson (2), Symes, Merton, and Marshall, Messrs. Harper, Nanearrow, Godby, Fell, Hudson, Paehell, Dunsford, Ross, Hallett, Captain Blunt and Captain Mellor. It was a lovely day for being on the river, and a very delightful and merry time was spent. Polo Season.

The polo season opened on Saturday under most favourable auspices, Hagley Park looking its best. Quite a number of scratch matches were played. Among those taking part in them were: Messrs. A. Rhodes, T. Cowlishaw, Gerald Stead, J. D. Hall, Dr. Maitland. H. ActonAdams, Dr. Pritchard Jones, J. Free, G. Rutherford, A. Allen and C. Rutherford. Mrs. Arthur Rhodes, wife of the President of the Christchurch Polo Club, entertained the players and visitors at afternoon tea. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Wardrop. Dr. and Mrs. Stevenson, Mr. and Mrs. Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Macdonald, Miss Macdonald, Mrs. T. Cowlishaw, Mrs. and Miss Boyle, Mrs. Vernon, Miss Strachey. Mrs. G. L. Rutherford, Mr. and Mrs. J. Vernon, Miss Newton, Mrs. Maitland, Mrs. Free, Mrs. C. Reid, Mrs. Acton-Adams, Miss Russell and Miss Broderick. Personal. Dr. and Mrs. .1. C. Palmer and their little boy returned to Christchurch last week from their trip to England. Mr. and Mrs. J. Studholme, who have been staying with Mrs. Wigram (Park Terrace), have returned to the North Island. Mrs. Scott, wife of Captain Scott, of the Antarctic Expedition, left Christchurch last week for Sydney, where she will be the guest of Lady Poore (Admiralty House) for a short time. Miss R. Williams (Geraldine) is visiting Christchuroh. Airs. Hugh Reeves (Christchurch) has returned from Timaru, where she had been the guest of Mrs. C. Gresson. The Rev. A. Hansell and Mrs. Hansell

(Wellington) are staying with Airs. Julius at Bishopscourt, Christchurch. Mrs. Gorrie (Auckland) is the guest of Mrs. J. B. Way nt Park Terrace, Christchurch. Mrs. Wigley (Timaru) has been staying with Christchurch friends. The Afisses Frankish (Wanganui) are visiting with friends in Christchurch. DOLLY VALE.
