Whalley, photo. MR L. A. ABRAHAM. Mr Lionel Augustus Abraham, chairman of directors of the firm of Barraud and Abraham, Ltd., Palmerston North, was born at Barton Mills. Suffolk, on May 11th, 1863. He came to New Zealand in November, 1883. Mr Abraham was president of the Manawatu Club on three occasions, and is a member of the Racing Club Committee. He has also held the position of hon, secretary of the Manawatu Golf Club since its inception in 1897. In 1892 Messrs E. A. Barraud and L. A. Abraham purchased from Colonel Gorton and Mr R. S. Abraham the seed and grain business conducted by them under the name of Stevens and Gorton. After the purchase, the business was carried on under the name of Barraud and Abraham, at Palmerston North and Feilding. Two years later. Mr W. M. Hartgill joined the firm, and a branch was opened at Dannevirke under his management. In 1903 the business was converted into a limited liability company, the three partners being the managing directors. In 1908 Mr E. A. Barraud retired, and Mr H. F. Gibbons, for many years an officer of the Bank of New Zealand, took his place as managing director. The firm now has an office at Wellington, and extensive business connections throughout the whole Dominion.

Ltd., was born in Leamington, England, in 1862. came to New Zealand in December, 1883. Mr Smeeton has taken an active part in the public life of Auckland, and for five and a-half years was a member of the City Council. He resigned recently owing to the pressure of private business. He was a member of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board from its formation, and for some time occupied a seat on the Harbour Board. For several years he has been a member of the executive of the Employers’ Association, and was a trustee of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind for a considerable time. Mr. Smeeton commenced business in Karangahape-road in 1892, but shortly afterwards opened in Queen-street. In 1901-2 the present premises were built and the business formed into a limited liability company, with Mr. Smeeton as managing director. The increase in business requiring more room, a contract has just been let, which, with electric lifts and lights, and the erection of cooling chambers, will run to over £20,000, the whole premises being remodelled and brought up-to-date.
