PERSONAL NOTES.

The death is recorded of Mr. D. C. Hutton, for nearly forty years director of the School of Art at Dunedin. He leaves five sons (one of wl>om was director of the Wanganui Technical School and Art Master) and five daughters. The Rev. F. C. Dong, M.A., of Te Aute, Hawke’s Bay, left Wellington for Sydney on Friday, en route for Bombay, where he is to enter' the missionary field. Mr. Tx»ng is a nephew of Canon Gould, and is well known in Auckland, where he lived before joining the ministry. It is stated that Captain Brice Wilson, late of the Sth Dancers, applied for a position in the New Zealand Defence Force, but found his chances prejudiced by the present position of his ease, which was discussed in the House

of Commons recently. He is understood to .be pressing for further inquiries into the matter.

The many friends of Mrs. K. Alma Wooten, late lady superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, will be pleased te hear that, after nine months' holiday in the Commonwealth, she has decided to resume her professional duties, and has accepted the position of matron at the Balmain and Districts Hospital, Sydney, N.S.W. Mr. J. R. Kirk, of Gisborne, questioned by a ‘'Herald” reporter a« to the truth of a statement that he intended opposing the Hon. J. Carroll at the next election, stated that he was quite unable to say what had. given rise to such a statement. Whilst it was not improbable that ho would at some future data seek election to the House, he had no intention at present, of doing so next election. Mr. ,1. Mowbray St. John was a passenger from Sydney by the Westralia, which arrived at Auckland on Monday. Mr. Edward Sidney Jenkins has been appointed assistant meat inspector in the Department of Agriculture, Commerce and Tourists. Dr. Percival, at present acting medical officer at the Porirtra Mental Asylum, has be m appointed ship’s surgeon for the Maitai, which is about to enter the new San Francisco service. He will join ■the vessel on November 15 th. At a sitting of the Conciliation Council at Auckland, Mr. C. Grosvenor mentioned that since Mr. H. Banfield had last appeared before the Council he bad sustained a sad bereavement in the death of his wife, and be suggested that the Council tender its sincere sympathy and condolenee with Mr. Banfield in his affliction. The suggestion was given effect to. Dr. S. Skerman, of Marton, SurgeonGeneral of the New Zealand Defence Forces, returned by the Warrimoo on Thursday after a seven months’ tour. While in England, Dr. Skerman visited the training camps at Aidershot, where he found the arrangements in connection with the military hospitals and medical corps to be excellent. He considers they have improved considerably since the new territorial scheme started. A Press Association cable from Sydney announces the deaths <( Major Morris, of the Royal Australian Artillery, and Colonel Strong, organiser of the New South Wales cadets, and for many years Commandant of the New South Wales school cadets. The departure of Mr. Geo. Dixon, who is to leave Wellington early in December to take up his residence in Auckland, will bo a serious loss to sport in Wellington (says t'ie “Dominion”). Mr. Dixon, who, it will be recalled, was the manager of the AH Black Rugby football team which visited England, is chairman of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, a trustee of the Athletic Park, secretary of the Northern Bowling Association, and a popular member of the Thorndon Bowling Club.
