We gave away nearly £300,000 per annum in duty in order to benefit the people. Yet we had. the statement publicly made that with a duty of £6 a ton against the outside world, sugar was sold at a lower rate in Australia than in New Zealand, where we liave no duty. If that statement was correct, a heavy amount was being taken out of the consumers of New Zealand.— tiir Joseph
