WATER FOR WELLINGTON. THE big dam now in course of construction and nearing completion at AA'ainui-O-Ala ta, is situated immediately above the old reservoir which has supplied the city of Wellington for so many years. Reser-voir-building has marked the march of progress of the several municipalities of New Zealand of recent years, and particularly of the Wellington City Council. Only about three years ago the big dam at Karori was finished, which was built, as this one, immediately above the old Karori Reservoir, so well-known to Wellington citizens. Both these big construction works have been huge undertakings, and should, together with smaller reservoirs for the supply of higher levels, conserve sufficient water to meet the requirements of both city and suburbs for a good many years to come. The dam at Wainui is located about twenty miles from the city and twelve from the Lower Hutt station, in a direct line east over the Wainui Hills. The work is of ferro-concrete, and is the first reinforced dam South of the Line. A glance through the illustrations will show the saving of material in construction as compared with the solid job at Karori. Notwithstanding this fact, no less than 22,000 tons of concrete have been used already, and over 200 tons of steel will have been used before the work is finally finished. The wall is 540 feet in length and 44 feet in height, the width at base being 68 feet and 14 feet at top. The contract price was £46,000. The whole of the work has been carried out under the direct supervision of Air. Alorton, City Engineer, by Alessrs. Martin, Harrell and Snaddow, contractors. The important post of supervising foreman is held by Air. J. Thomas, who so capably filled the same position at Karori, and under whom from 50 to 100 men have been employed for the past two years. Air. J. Hardy was clerk of works until June last, and since then Air. P. Robinson has been acting in that capacity. The work has been in hand about two years, and is expected to be finished about Christmas.
