PICTON.

August 1]»

±erritoriaAs Social This affair —an old rose with a new name —eventuated on Friday evening, and was decidedly “the” event of the year. The territorials are justly proud of the success of all their socials, and their friends look forward to them from year to year. The guests were received by Captain Robinson, Captain Kenny, Lieut. Mclntosh, and Quartermaster McCormick, and all shortly joined in the opening ceremony of the grand march. Among the pretty frocks I noticed: Mrs. Robinson, in rose-pink taffeta; Mrs. Riddell, heliotrope silk; Mrs. Cawte, cream satin and lace; Mrs. Nicol, pale blue silk with silver chiffon on the bodice; Mi's. J. Smith, cream satin and lace; Miss V. Fuller, blue satin and lace; Miss Coffey, handsome cream satin; Miss Jones, stylish blue silk with white lace; Miss Coates (Christchurch), pink -taffeta, trimmed with tiny frills edged with lace; Miss Harrison, white silk; Miss L. Greensill, cream lace; Miss Sullivan, white satin, trimmed with silk chiffon; Miss Young, brown silk voile. Others present were: Mesdames Allen, McCormick, Lewis, Chambers, Redman, Storey (2), Misses Cragg (2), Storey. (3), Fuller, Greensill, Oxley (2), Godfrey (2), etc., and in addition to the Territorials, among whom were Chaplain T. J. Smith and Sur-geon-Captain Redman, were Messrs. McCormick, Madsen, Nicol, Riddell, Lucena, Mclntosh, Lyndsay, Greensill, Parker, Fuller, etc. During the evening, the very handsome cup donated by Captain Kenny, and won by Corporal Burns, was presented by the ex-mayor, Mr. H. A. McCormick. Open-Air Concerts. On Sunday afternoon a crowd of townsfolk walked round to the Domain to listen to the band discoursing music by the sea. Everybody thought it was very nice, and hoped they would play again, and often. Society is in a flutter of anticipation in regard to the advent of Madame Carreno and "The Girl from Rector’s.” The latter has had such an advertisement from the churches, that everybody has made up their minds to go and see for themselves what the play is like. Already the booking office is besieged for reserved seats. Presentation. On Friday last, at the Christchurch Meat Company’s Works, Mr. Healey was the recipient of a handsome pair of field glasses. Mr. Atkins made the presentation on behalf of the permanent staff and foreman. Mrs. Healey was also presented with an epergne, as a wedding present. Euchre and Music. On Tuesday evening there was another of the Fire Brigade’s euchre tournaments, which was even more successful than others. Miss Lloyd won the first ladies’ prize, and Mr. Les. Cragg the men’s. On Tuesday evening Mrs. and Miss Dawkins had a small musical evening. Miss Chambers (piano) and Miss COates (violin) gave much pleasure, and Miss Dawkins, and Mrs. and Mr. Riddell sang several songs. Afterwards there was a merry round of games of cards. Others present were: Air. R. Dawkins, Mr. and Mrs. Vickers, and Mrs. Allen.

On Wednesday, Mrs. R. Storey gave an afternoon with music for her sister, Mrs. T. Storey. Those present were: Mesdaines .Storey (2), Allen, T. J. Smith, Petrie, Nicol, Chambers, Haughey, King, T.ucena, Maealister, Misses Storey (3), Maealister, Fuller, Coffey, Edwards, and Chambers. Personal. Mr. Healey, manager of the local branch of the Christchurch Meat Company, who has been away to be married, has returned with his bride. The Picton members of the deputation to interview the Premier, re construction of the South Main Trunk railway, were: Mr. Gordon Maitland (Mayor), Councillors Pugh, Clinch, Redman, Fell, and Mr. B. C. Smith (secretary to the Beautifying Society). They returned on Monday. Mrs. McNab (Blenheim) spent a few days in Pieton last week. Mrs. Vickers spent a few days in Blenheim last week, visiting .several old friends. Miss Maealister has resigned her position as assistant mistress of the Borough School, in view of her marriage, which, I hear, takes place early in October.
