MILDEW ON ROSES.

LYSOL WILL DESTROY. The best thing 1 have tried, next to Mo-Effie, is lysol. I have used this for three years, and have kept my young and old plants clean with it from March to May, the worst three months in the year for mildew. I start to use it at the first appearance of the fungus, and spray all plants (except mildew proof roses), every five or six days. I use one tablespoonful to one gallon of water; for preference, I mix it in half-pint or pint of hot water. It is not absolutely necessary to do this, as it is soluble in cold water. The spraying must be done between 9 a.m. and 4 p.ra., as it then dries quickly, and does not burn ; if the spraying is done in the evening, the solution remains in a wet state on the tips of the shoots all night, and so has a chance to burn.

I have never had occasion to use lysol in spring, as my plants are very seldom affected by mildew. I find it can be kept in check by rubbing a little sulphur on affected parts with finger and thumb. I may add that in very bad cases of mildew in autumn I snould spray every two days until the plant was free from

the fungus, or even increase the strength to two tablespoonfuls to the gallon, if necessary. The price of lysol is 12/- to 13/- per gallon, but in small quantities it would be more expensive, but if the chemists (where it is obtainable), were told it was for spraying purposes, 1 think it

would be supplied at reduced prices. 1 have not exhausted the various causes of mildew, or given my experience of all the remedies I have tried. By doing so, I would have taken .finch of your valuable space, so have con lined myself to the practical side of the question.—S. Brundrett, Moonee Ponds, Vic.
