PALMERSTON NORTH.

July 1. Winter Show. The Winter Show was brought to a most successful end last Friday. A week of faultless weather attracted visitors in crowds, and all previous records were broken. The hunting competition on Thursday was very interesting, and despite a number of thrilling spills, nothing serious happened. I noticed on the stand: Mrs. R. S. Abraham, wearing a black skirt and sable coat, large black hat; Miss Marjory Abraham, old rose frock, hat of same shade with velvet trimming; Mrs. H. R. Waldegrave, black coat and skirt; black hat with black velvet; Mrs. C. J. Monro, navy costume made with a long coat, black hat with black wings; Miss Monro, navy coat and skirt, silver fox furs, black hat with black silk; Mrs. Denner (Feilding) green tweed coat and skirt, hat with roses; Miss Porter, green coat and skirt, mauve hat; Miss Collins, frey striped tweed coat and skirt, blue straw hat with black velvet band; Mrs. F. E. Watson, black coat and skirt, black hat with wings; Miss Watson, brown coat and skirt, brown tweed hat; Mrs. A. N. Gibbons, brown tweed coat and skirt, blut satin hat with wings; Mrs. Mostyn Jones (Feilding), navy coat and skirt, mauve hat; Mrs. McKnight, grey striped eoat and (skirt, black beaver hat; Miss Randolph, navy coat and skirt braided in black, hat with blue wings; Mrs. Potts, blaek coat and skirt, large black hat, pale pink scarf; Miss Hartgill (Danevirke), brown tweed coat and skirt, brown tweed hat with pheasant feathers; Miss Humphreys, navy coat and skirt with pale blue collar, navy hat; Mrs. Pratt, black coat and skirt, black hat; Mrs. \\ ilton, winecoloured coat and skirt, hat of same shade with white ospreys, sable furs; Mrs A. Grey, blaek coat and skirt, mauve hat; Mrs. and Miss Dempsey, Mrs. H. F. Gibbons, Miss Mowlem, the Misses Russell, the Misses Bell Miss Preece, the Misses Park, Mrs. and Miss Coombs. A Dance. A successful little dance was given in the Foresters’ Hall last Wednesday by a party of the younger bachelors of the town. Some of thoee responsible for affaire were: Messrs. Batchelor, J. O’Brien, G. Lyons, D. Buick, Ray, Ritcher, and T. Gibbons. A large contingent of visitors I noticed from Feilding, but all were not fortunate enough to get here; one treacherous car broke down, and the passengers, all men, had to go home again. The Chaperons were: Mre. H. F. Gibbons, Mrs. A. N. Gibbons, and Mre. Fuller. Mrs. 11. F. Gibbons wore

a blaek silk frock with sequin trimming; Mrs A. N. Gibbons, eream satin; Mrs. Fuller, green charmeuse satin; Mrq.- D. F. Reed, saxe blue taffeta with silver trimming; Miss Mabel Smith, bright pink ehiffon taffeta; Miss Porter, soft pink silk with touches of silver; Miss Bell, mauve crepe de chine with bands of gold and clusters of violets; Miss G. Bell, white muslin and lace, pink rose on corsage; Miss Mawhinney, cream satin; Miss Watson, old rose silk; Miss Prior (Feilding); Miss Bruce (Feilding), the Misses Buick (2), Gillies, Gemmel (2), Mrs. Fannin, and several others were there. In the Stalls. The Clarke and Meynell Company played a short season here last week. “Pete” and “The Hypocrites” were staged and attracted large audiences, a very large proportion being visitors here for the winter show. Amongst the local people present were: Mr. and Mrs. A. Strang, Mr. and Mrs. Goring Johnston, Mr. A. E. Russell and Miss Russell, Mr. and Mrs. A. Guy, Dr. and Mrs. Stowe, Dr. and Mrs. Wilson, Mr., Mrs, and the Misses Park, Miss Bond, Miss Preece, Mr. and Mrs. Brood, Mr. Laing Meeson, Mr. and Miss Collins, Mr. Goldingham. Orchestral Concert. The first orchestral concert of the fifteenth season was given at the Opera House on Wednesday night, and, as usual, had a crowded audience. The vocalists, Miss Irene O’Brien, of Palmerston, and Mr. Baines, of the Wairarapa, each scored a decided success with their different numbers. Mrs. M. Cohen, Dr. and Mrs. O’Brien, Miss Mona O’Brien, Mrs. A. Strang, Miss Dorothy Strang, Mr. and Mrs. Porritt, Mrs. Holmes, Mrs. P. Sim, Mrs. and tho Mieses Park, Archdeacon and Mrs. Harper, Miss Beswick, Mr., Mrs. and the Misses Barnicoat, Mr. and the Misses Smith, Miss Porter, the Misses Tucker, Mre. D. O. Shute, Mrs. R. Davis, Mrs. A. N. Gibbons, Miss W. Watson, Mr. and Mrs T. Rodgers, Miss Scanlon, Mr. and Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Portenus, the Misses Khutze, the Misees Pegden, Mre. Brood, Mr, Mrs and Miss Ward, Mr and Mre Monrad, Mrs. Holmes, Dr. and Mrs. Stowe, Dr. and Mrs. Watson, the Missee Drew, and many others were present. Personal. Miss Heni Park was amongst the successful undergraduates “capped” at the annual ceremony at Victoria College, Wellington, yesterday. Her father, Mr. W. Park, was present at the function. Miss Bright, who has been staying with Mrs. R. K. Reed, has returned home to Gisborne. Mrs. F. S. Meßae has returned from a long visit to Auckland.

Miss Geinmel is away in Wanganui.
