"Last week's boisterous southerly weather and rain and hail interfered considerably with golf in this city, and it was only the venturesome few who bravedl the elements. Owing to the nature of the soil, the Heretaunga links had pools of water all over the place. At Miramar, on the other hand, the sandy soil absorbed most of the moisture, and the turf was in fair playing order. The Wellington Golf ( lub have engaged Watt (late of Dunedin.) as their professional, in place of G. L. Martig

who left to take an appointment with another club. A curious thing happened the other day to Mr E. P. Simcox, cf Otaki, whilst playing for his club in a match against the Manawatu Golf Club on the Hokowhitu links. In driving a ball round the end of the building it just hit the corner and thereafter disappeared. After searching for some considerable time, Mr Simcox discovered it snugly nestling in a sparrow’s nest under the eaves of the building, and being unable to play it, lost the hole. When it was known that Arthur Duncan was unable to make the trip South to assist his club in their match against the Christchurch Golf Club at Shirley, it did not occasion much surprise that the Wellington Golf Club were defeated. The Christchurch Club have four or five scratch players, and the Wellington team

were each in the position of having to play a man just a little bit too good for them. They hope, however, to turn the tables in the return match at the end of the year on the Heretaunga links, when the Tuson cup will be played for. Picton. Messrs. Vickers, Riddell and Wicks represented the Picton Club in Blenheim on Saturday week. The first round of the Riddell medal competition was played on Saturday afternoon at the Mount Pleasant links. Hanson, Rev. J. G. Chapman, K. Mathews, D. Hutchen, A. H. Steeds, T. R. Southall, C. H. Burgess, and C. A. Benbow. The deciding 18 holes will b» played on a date to be fixed. There was a good muster of players on the Vogeltown links last Thursday afternoon, when partners were chosen and an interesting match was played. The best score was returned by W. Perham, who completed the 18 holes for a gross score of 114. Mr F. Taylor, of Messrs P. Hayin.cn and Co., has kindly donated a prize to the Ngamotu Chib to be competed for in a men’s match.

Misses Nicholson, Prior, Bailey, and Bruce has greatly improved in their play; they all won their matches. Miss Moore halved her match with Miss Taylor on the last green.
