11,000 TON LINER FOUNDERED—LOSS OF THE PERICLES.

News was received on April Ist from Perth of the loss of the Aberdeen Line’s fine new steamer Pericles (11.000 tons), while homeward bound from Australia, with a full complement of passengers and a valuable cargo, valued at half a million. The Pericles was noticed about six miles south of Capt Leeuwin (W.A.). flying signals of distress, and with her bows well down. The liner gradually drifted closer in. and struck a rock three miles off the Cape, and sank in about two hours. All the passengers and crew landed in the ship’s boats without mishap, and were accommodated at the Korridale township, pending the arrival of a vessel which had been sent to take them back to Fremantle. <li The promenade deck.
