LADIES' GOLF.

This paper has been appointed ths official organ of the Ladies’ Golf Union, New Zealand branch. Secretaries of ladies’ golf clubs are invited to forward official notices, handicaps and alterations, results of competi tions, and other matters of interest, ta reach the publishing office not later than the Saturday prior to date of publication. Auckland. (From Our Lady Correspondent., The Easter tournament at Okoroiro lias become very popular, particularly with the men, of whom a large number have gone up to compete; the onlyladies I know competing are the Misses Cotter and Richmond and Mrs mick. Great interest is being taken in the “At Home” given by the Auckland Golf Clulbs on Saturday next. A very large number of guests have been invited. The annual general meeting of the Auckland Golf Club iis to be held on Saturday evening, the 2nd, when very important business will come up for discussion. It was feared that when the club had to move so far out of town the membership would deer-case, but this is not the case. A number of players of both sexes have joined both clubs. Mr John Burns has gone down to Christchurch to take part in the tournament there. I read the other day- of a most wonderful series of ‘Tuck,” so much so that I feel sure the “lucky- man” must have felt sad, feeling sure he had used up the luck of a lifetime in one fell swoop. In a match between two London amateurs (playing to the 13th green, no less), A (the lucky one) was iir the rough about 40 yards from the green, and had to loft over a cluster of trees. This was successfully done, and the ball landed on the green and ran into the tin. The next, a one-shot hole, went into heather alongside the green. Again the niblick was necessary, and again A’s ball ran into the hole. At the fifteenth, a bogey five, A was some 30 yards from the green with his second, and in approaching his opponent B knocked A’s ball close enough to the pin to make a four certain. A two resulted at the sixteenth, which is about 200 yards in length. Neither player 'reached J he green from the tee, and playing the odd A was about three yards from the pin. Approaching with a ma<shie, B again struck A’s ball, and this time holed it out. Thus the “lucky one” did the four holes, for which the respective bogeys are 4, 3. 5 and 4. in 3,2, 4 and 2. or five under the par score. The extreme and curious definition of golf golf is whit Sherman said war was. ami what Boss Croker said politics were: “That very hot place with a very short name.” If you don’t believe me, drive into the very- long grass from the too, and then say the first warm word that comes to your lips, and you have got it. Golf is the most aggravating, satisfying, seductive, royal sport in the world. It is the most democratic of all sports. All emperor enn play it no bettor than a caddie, perhaps dot so well. It is as

as the stock market, as fa*, cinating as they tell me draw poker is, as wilful as pursuit of the thoroughbred, as uncertain as love, as cov as youth itself. It s a long drive that has no curling. Cambridge. The annual meeting of the Cambridge Golf Club was held on Monday evening, when there was a good attendance, and the hon. secretary, Mr. A. 11. Nicoll, rea l the report. The total membership for last year was 59. I he record for the citrsc is 39, made by Mr. 11. B. Lusk, of Christ church. Notes of thanks were carried to those who had presented trophies for competition, to Mr. Ale Bride for new putting tins for the greens, and to the ladies who had contributed the teas; also to Mr. M. Wells and Mr. Caddv, who had assisted with the tea. Mr. McCormick. professional coach, of Auckland, has been engaged by the club as coach for ton days, and it is hoped members will avail themselves of Mr. McCormicL’s Hawera. The annual meeting of the Hawerct Golf Club was held on March 15, Mr W. O’Callaghan presiding. There was a. good attendance of members. The yearly report congratulated the chib on a successful year, and spoke hopefully of the prospects of the coming season. Mrs O. llawken was elected captain and secretary (vice Mrs O'Callaghan). the players under the TxG.U. method. The links were formally opened on the 17th March, a competition of mixed foursomes being played. The winners were Mrs O’Callaghan and Miss Douglas, Mr and Mrs Gillies second, one iM>int behind.

D. Meares presided over an attendance of sixty members. The annual report, which stated »hat the membership now stood at 2.3, and a most satisfactory balancesheet were unanimously adopted.
