NEWS FROM THE WATER (Special to “ Graphic.**) FIXTURES. Man-h 5 — North Shore Yacht Club’s Cruising Race. March 12—Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s Class and Power Boat Races. Ma rvh 12—Devonport Yacht Club’s General Handicap and Power Boat Race. March 17—Ngaruawahia Regatta. THE weather on Saturday and Sunday was very much on the bad side, a strong northerly wind blowing with thick, rainy weather on Saturday, dying away on Sunday. The consequence was that most of the yachts both sailers and motors, remained at their moorings, instead of going on the usual week-end cruise. The yachts Waioni and Iris are away on a cruise to the North. On Saturday the Victoria Cruising Club will hold the annual race for boats sailed by ladies. The event, as usual, is creating a great deal of interest amongst the members of the club and their friends.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s next class races take place on March 12.

The fifth cruising race of the North Shore Yacht (Hub will be held on March 5. the destination being Drunken Bay. The Devonport Yacht Club hold a general handicap race over the harbour course; also a power boat race and one for dinghies of 14ft. and 10ft. Mr. A. Sanford is having a new oil yacht built of the following dimensions: —Length 38ft, beam 7ft. loin., draught 2ft. Gin. She will he fitted with a 16 horse-power Standard engine. North Shore Yacht Club provided some very interesting races last Saturday afternoon. There were nine classes of boats catered for. eight of which were ■well represented, and. although the weather was unfavourable, from a spectacular point of view, those who followed the races had a good deal of enjoyment, some the races being keenly contested. New Steam Yacht. Mr. James Reid has just launched a fine-looking steam yacht, which he has built to the order of Mr A. Braund, of Ponsonby. The new yacht is built on similar lines to the ’’crack” oil yacht Seabird, and all the timber used in her construction is of the best heart of kauri. Her dimensions are:—Length 38ft., beam Bft. 9in., draught 3ft. The engines are on the surface compound principle, and ere expected to drive the yacht at a rate of speed of about 9 knots per hour. The official trial trip is expected to take flace in about a fortnight's time. 1 North Shore Yacht Club. The North Shore Yacht Club held a series ©f class races on Saturday afternoon, which provided some excellent sport for the coin'petitors. There was a strong northerly wind blowing, but the weather was wet and thick, making it very uncomfortable for the onlookers on Victoria wharf and elsewhere. •There were good entries for each event, and there were only two or three absentees "When the starts were made. The yacht ■Thistle was the flapship, being anchored off the eastern end of Victoria wharf. Messrs ,W. A. Wilkinson (commodore) ami Brown and White were the ojficers of the day. and are to be com pl i men ted upon the promptness with which the races were got away to time. Unfortunately in the rare for class IX. the scratch boat, Mistral, capsized during the race, and this necessitates the event •being sailed over again. The following are the details: Classes I. and 11. These races did not take place, as most of the bouts of these classes were away cruising. Class 111. Entries and handicaps: Roma ki «<*ratch. Calypso scratch, Mystery Om. Auturere 15m. The race was started at 2.30 p.m., all the entrants crossing the line to a very good start. The finishing times ■were: Ronaki, 5h 28m 15s; Emerald 5h 43m 26*; Calypso, oh 43m 355; who win in Chat order. Class IV. Entries and handicaps: Glady •cratch. Ranee 2m, Ge»ha 3m, Zoe 4m. Marti 4m, Gannet 9m. Competitors were t dispatched at 2.42 p.m. Marti was first away, followed by Zoe and Glady, and the others all close together. The finishing times were: Geisira. 5h Mm 26k; Glady, Oh Marti, 611 <>m A3s; Zoe, Gh 5m 15s; Gannet, Oh 5m .’l4s; Ranee, 6h 7m 15a. On corrected times the finish is: Marti 1, 4«ei**ha 2, Gnnnot 3. 4 Chuis V.-—Kntritw and handicaps; Venus

scratch, Mowal scratch. Acacia Im, Hetty 2m, Hilda sm, Echo sm, Daphne 7m, Ko-, whai Bm. The race was started at 2.48 p.m. ’All started, Venus. Kowhal, and Mowal being The first across the line, almost together. On the first round, Hetty and Daphne retired. The finishing times were: Venus: 4h 25m 10s; Echo. 4h 28m 10s; Hilda. 4h 28m 50s; Mowal, 4h 32m 7s; Kowhal 4h 33m 265; Acacia. 4h 50m. On time allowance, the result is: Echo 1, Hilda 2, Venus 3. Class Vl.—Entries and handicaps: Eileen scratch, Ellen Im, Merlin 3m, Rio 4m, Roma sm, Mei 6m, Lilac Bm. The race was started at 2.45 p.m.; once round. All started well together, excepting Ellen, which was five minutes late. The finishing times were: Eileen, 4h 49m 28s; Lilac, 4h 50m 235; Merlin, 4h 51m 21s; Mei. 4h 52m 10s; Rio, 4h 56m 20s; Roma, sh; Ellen. 5h 2m 28s. On corrected times the result is: Lilac 1, Mei 2, Merlin 3.

Class Vll.—Entries and handicaps: Bona scratch, ELona Im, Mayo 2m, Mavourneen Bm. The race was started at 3 o’clock. Fiona was first across the line, Mavourneen being next, with Mayo close up. Bona did not start. Mayo had to give up, owing to her backstay carrying away. The finishing times were: Eona, 4h 46m 575; Mavourneen. 5h 14m 20s, the result being in that order. Class Vlll.—Maroondah scratch Konini 12m, Venture 16m. This race was started at 3.6 p.m. Venture did not start. Konini finished at 4h 58m 455. and, as the Mavourneen did not finish, Konini takes the prize. Class IX.—Entries and handicaps: Mistral scratch. Sceptre fcni. Saint 34m, Lasca sm, Flattie Gm, Dixie 7in, Ayesha 7m. Ikatere 7m. The race was started at 3.12 p.m. Twice round. All started well together, Basra being the only absentee. During the race Mistral capsized off Judge’s Bay, and Ikatere was the only boat to finish at. 5h 30m 10s, all the others having retired owing to the accident to the Mistral. The race has been ordered to be resailed. Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron held a cruising race to Awaroa Bay, Waiheke, on Saturday afternoon. There was a strong breeze from the north blowing, with thick, rainy weather. Owing to the harbour authorities refusing permission, owing to the expected arrival of 11.M.5. Powerful, the usual mark boat was not in position, but it had been arranged to take a line between the Queen-street wharf and one of the warships at anchor, but that arrangement fell through owing to the warships proceeding to sea on Saturday morning. The officials of the day (Messrs. Stewart and Hewson) fixed the starting line from off the eastern end of Q'ueen-st. whari and O’Nei’H’s Point. The race was started at 3 p.m. The entries and handicaps were: Rainbow (scratch). Ilex (4m). Aorere (64m), Kotiri (7m), Victory (7sm). The destination was Awaroa Bay, Waiheke: distance. 16 knots. Rainbow was first away. Victory and Ilex cross the line together, Aorere

being a few seconds tarter; whilst Ko tint was 24 minutes late. Rainbow started off st a great pace, the wind increasing gradually. whilst Ilex, which was to windward, forged ahead of Victory. When off Victoria wharf. Devonport, however, Hex had worked up into first position, sailing remarkably well. All the boats finished, the result being: Ilex 1, Rainbow 2, Victory 3.
